Revelations

As a bride-to-be, I sometimes find myself holding back information or being embarrassed in certain company. It is quite an odd feeling, as with my friends, I am usually quite the open book (sometimes to CP’s dismay).

For instance, I find myself not talking about the wedding that much to certain friends. My MOH and my sister (a bridesmaid) are both single and while my MOH is fine with that because she is so busy, my sister is not. In fact, when my parents threw CP and me an engagement party over Christmas, my sister proceeded to get embarrassing drunk and get upset about not having a boyfriend. Thankfully most people had left the party by then, but she definitely scared my parents. I don’t want to throw it in their face that I will be getting married, so I try not to talk about it too much. I am guessing that will have to change when it gets closer to the wedding though.

The embarrassment part stems from the ring. I LOVE my ring. It is amazingly beautiful and I am so lucky to have it. I am NOT complaining about it in the least bit! But at times I am embarrassed when in the presence of my friends that have smaller rings. Is that silly? It’s not like my ring is even THAT huge….but it is compared to say, some of my friends that got married in law school.

It’s possible that I might be self-imposing the ban on talking about the wedding, or it’s all in my head that I should be embarrassed about my ring. I guess I should try to enjoy the next nine months of our engagement, instead of hiding from it.

On a side note, a woman at work last night rode down in the elevator with me and said, “Aren’t you getting married this year?” And it dawned on me. HOLY CRAP I AM GETTING MARRIED THIS YEAR. When I told CP the story he didn’t see the big deal, but I think that it is because I am so used to telling people that my wedding would be next year, that when 2009 hit, it didn’t even occur to me how time is slowly ticking away towards the wedding. It started to get more real to me. I? Will be married in less than 10 months. Holy crap.

I know what you mean but you and CP have every right to yell it from the rooftops.

It can be hard when you don't want to seem boostful but, your wedding is going to be a very important day and it requires planning and ideas. There is someone who must be thrilled and you can bounce the ideas off of. You can always email me!

Don't let others limit your excitement, it is a special moment.

We are getting married this year too in August and I have not gotten used to the idea that we'll be married this year. Ack!

I echo what Christina said. You're a good person for being sensitive to those around you. But, you shouldn't have to hold back your excitement just because other people aren't in the same boat as you. I'm quite certain, given how you wrote about your concerns, that even if you didn't hold back, you're not the type of person to smoosh this exciting time in your life in other people's faces.

Second, my ring ... is big. A lot bigger than anyone would ever have guessed given my husband is a nurse. I inherited the stone from my grandmother and the setting my fiance chose shows its true size (the many prongs in her setting hid the stone). No one would ever know my husband spent $1K total.

There have been times when I felt all eyes were on me (or more specifically, my ring). But, I chalk it up to winning some and losing some ... I'm sure there are other things about your friends with smaller rings you wish were true in your life. Don't sweat it about the ring.

I have a feeling that if/when I get engaged, I'll feel the same way about talking about it as you do. My mom has a tendency to overthink/overtalk and drive everyone crazy about stuff like that, so she'll make things interesting.

And about the ring? Don't let it bother you. I bet it's gorgeous!

I totally get that. It really is hard to try and be as nonchalant as possible and try not to bring it up.

However, dude, you're getting married and you're allowed to be excited about it. And chances are everyone totally understands.

Just remove the alcohol from the situation! :)

I hear you. I'm keeping the wedding talk to a minimum... especially on my blog.

I don't know why I feel the need to censor myself, but I do.

In other news, I'll be a married woman in less than nine months! Holy crap.
