Hello anxiety! I've been waiting for you all summer long.

AHHHHHHHHHH. Alright so I haven't been freaking out about THE BAR too much this summer. I think that it is partly to do with the fact that I have never studied so much for an exam in my entire life. TWO MONTHS devoted to one test. Who does that? Stupid people that just went to law school that decided that their life didn't suck enough for the past three years.

Tonight? When I checked into my hotel? It allllll hit me. Not earlier today when I was in the law library studying for another NINE HOURS. But when I had to put all of my things into a plastic bag? Oh yes, the bar examiners do not trust us so we have to put all of our stuff into a plastic bag, just like you are going through security in an airport. I think that I am well prepared though:

*Advil (since I have been getting twenty bajillion headaches in the past two weeks)
*Caffeinated mints (the BEST thing since I don't drink coffee)
*Sweetarts (because I have quite the sweet tooth)
*Stomach pills (in case my stomach starts to act up)
*Earplugs (I don't think that I will use them because I always think that I start to breathe really heavy even though I am breathing normally)
*Highlighters
*Pens
*License
*Lip gloss
*Non-digital watch

Did I mention that all of these things need to be unwrapped in the plastic bag? Obviously some jackass a few years back decided to try to write notes onto wrappers or something so everything has to be taken out of the wrapper.

So BF? Sometimes not so good with what NOT to say. After I was done studying on Saturday night I started to watch tv with him. Our conversation:

Me: What are you going to say to me if I fail the bar?
BF: That you didn't study enough.
Me: WHAT??!!? (bursts out crying) Why would you say something like that?
BF: (shocked look on his face) What? I was just kidding. You have been studying so much this summer.
Me: You can't say that to me. That's awful!

Boys.

Alright, no more bitching because I have to go study some more. And I might, just might, have to go throw up.

Manly meat

Hello lover!
(Photo from Yahoo Sports)
I like my men manly. When I was growing up, I used to read Teen Beat with my sister, fawning over boys like Kirk Cameron. WTF? As I grew older, I started to fawn over rockers- people like Axl Rose and Anthony Kiedis. I even named our two goldfish after them. Again, WTF? But as my taste in actors and musicians has changed, one thing has stayed the same. I love me some manly sports-playing men. Growing up in my midwestern city? Michael Jordan was my unrequited love. He was so sexy with his bald head and huge smile. You could also tell that he put his heart into every single game. Now THAT's sexy.
After Michael Jordan retired (again and again), I had to find a new unrequited love. I found Brett and it was a match made in heaven. The scruff on the face. The love of the game. The clean image (minus the whole....uhhh painkiller addiction). My ex even gave me a tshirt that says "Got Favre?" instead of "Got Milk?" Even now that Brett's ass is a little saggy in his uniform? I still want to grab a piece of that adorable booty.
The reason I go into manly men is because thankfully, BF is a manly piece of meat. I have dated other guys that just can't cut it. I am still a tomboy, even in the last year of my 20s. I don't wear a lot of makeup, I would rather pants or capris over skirts and dresses, and I use one product in my hair after getting out of the shower (partly because I have curly hair and us curly hair people have lots of issues). I need a strong guy that doesn't mind a strong female.
One thing I can't stand? Men taking longer to get themselves ready than me. If you are a man that uses more products in your hair than me, we have a problem. I bet that Brett doesn't use ANY product in his hair. Okay, he probably doesn't need to because his hair is so short. Regardless.
I'm all for a guy being romantic, but when the guy is more sensitive then me? We have a problem. I dated a guy after college that was a musician. He was sensitive. I walked all over him. It wasn't as fun as I thought it would be. So when Brett cried after announcing his retirement? That's okay because it was for the love of the game. Hell, I cried after my last meet in college. (I'm also a girl so it's okay).
Speaking of crying, I am going to need my manly man to be there for me if I suddenly break out into tears Wedsnesday night while I am at the bar after THE BAR is over. I do love me some manly hugs.
No posting again until Thursday.....send good thoughts my way tomorrow and Wednesday. Thursday I will be back in god knows what shape.

We are the main attraction

BF and I have been at our new house for a grand total of 4 days. In those 4 days I have met 6 of our neighbors. They have all stopped by to say hello, introduce themselves, ask if we had any questions, etc. I don't think that I have ever known 6 of my neighbors in any of the cities I have lived in since college! The town that we are now living in definitely has more of a "small town" feel where everyone knows everyone. I'm sure that it doesn't help that everyone that we have met (save for one house) is at least 50. They probably don't have anything better to do with their time.

So while it is nice of the neighbors to come over and say hi (And give us fresh lettuce from their garden! And invite us to use their pool whenever we want!), we do kind of feel like we are on display. For the past couple of days we have had PODS outside in the driveway and I think that it calls attention to us even more. Last night as we were playing outside with the dog some guy ran just past our house, watching us the entire time, and then turned around right after our driveway, watching us yet again on his second time past the house. Very odd.

On a similar note, it's been really hard to study this past week. I want to be excited about our new place and start putting stuff away.....but I need to be studying. This is our first place that is OURS. The condo that we lived in together out west was BF's and while I lived there for a year, a lot of my stuff had to be put in storage until we moved into a bigger place. We finally have room for both of our furniture. While I had somewhat of a say in where things were put at the old place, I feel like we are working together more as opposed to individuals. It's a nice feeling.

One of the first things BF had to do after we unpacked the PODS? Mow the lawn. I took a picture of him doing it because I thought that it was so funny. When he came in after a few hours of mowing (it has a small deck and kept getting clogged b/c the grass was pretty long), I asked if he was ready to be this domesticated. :-) He promptly told me that he was re-thinking his need for a big lawn in the future. Ha!

A girl can dream can't she?

Growing up, we always had a dog. Our first dog was was a Dalmatian, but I was too young to really remember him. We then got an English Setter who was a great dog, but very high strung. Unfortunately, his life ended early when he got hit by a car. The last dog we had while I was growing up was a Black Labrador. He was the best.

After college I wanted a dog, but didn't think that I could handle the responsibility as a single person. I wasn't home at normal hours and left the city a lot to visit friends all down the east coast. I didn't think that I could spend the time that was necessary to train a dog and felt that it wouldn't be fair. I also had no idea where my life was going at that point and didn't want to get a dog, only to have to give it up in a few years.

But right before I started law school, I started to think that it was once again time to get a dog. My parents warned me that I would not have time to take care of a dog as a first year law student. After my first week I agreed! But then, as luck would have it, I met BF my first semester of law school and low and behold? He had a dog. And not just a dog but the cutest, furriest, best dog EVER!

Don't you just want to snuggle with her?

How can you say no to a face like this?
She really is the sweetest, most friendly dog you will ever meet. At 100 lbs, she has no idea how much she really weighs! Then, as third year rolled around I started to think about how much fun it would be for her to have a buddy. Once in a while when I was bored in class I would go on to various shelter websites and look for Bermese Mountain Dogs....or Saint Bernards...or Great Pyranees...or various combinations. Once, I was ready to drive to a neighboring state to city about 7 hours away for a puppy that was part Great Pyranees, part Bermese Mountain Dog. Seriously the cutest puppy EVAH.
But, as much as I wanted a puppy, there were a lot of things up in the air this past year....where I would get a job, where we would live, etc. BF even thought about getting me a puppy for graduation (OMG!)....after the bar was over of course. However, my dream is still just a dream right now. While I am really excited about my job that starts up in about a month? My commute is probably going to be at least an hour. And BF's commute the opposite way? Most likely at least an hour too. That means that getting another dog (especially a puppy) would be unfair. *tear*
Until then, I dream of a dog like this or this, or even another one of these. So, uh, can you tell that BF and I are big dog people?

Don't put THAT in your mouth

Stress eating. I does it. I know that I do it and yet….I keep on doing it. When it got close to finals in law school? What did I do? Eat when I wasn’t hungry. And I didn’t eat rabbit food like lettuce and carrots. Oh no I ate fast food, ice cream, pizza, etc. All while telling myself that I needed to eat quick food because I didn’t have time to have anything healthy. Because of my stress eating? I am twenty-five pounds heavier graduating law school than when I started law school (I wasn’t exactly a stick when I came into law school either). Ugh. I am at the heaviest I have ever been in my life and it feels awful.

I know what I have done in the past to lose weight (count calories, go to the gym, not drink as much, etc.), but as I get older it is going to be harder to lose that extra weight. I made it a goal this year to lose weight before my 30th birthday in December and I am hoping that after the bar exam I can stick to it. I am a schedule-loving girl and when I worked prior to law school it was easy to drag myself to the gym after work every day so that I missed the bad traffic on my way home. I am hoping to do the same starting in less than a month.

One of my possible impediments? BF. He is absolutely THE BEST COOK EVER. I keep telling him that he is chef stuck in an engineer’s body. But…..this means he doesn’t use margarine or Pam instead of butter, he makes sauces for vegetables instead of just eating them steamed, etc.

Another impediment is simply wanting to spend time with BF. This will be the first time since we started dating that I won’t have any homework or studying to do at night (oh boy I can’t wait!) and he won’t be traveling during the week. We can actually (gasp!) spend time together. Because he commutes one way and I commute the other way we probably won’t join the same gym. That could be quality time we spend together after our work days are over.

BF and I do try to get out a lot on the weekends for athletic endeavors. My first birthday present from him was to learn how to ski because if I lived in a ski state, then I had to learn. Recently, we bought kayaks and have been enjoying getting out on the water as much as possible. We both have golf clubs and I would like to teach him how to play tennis after we are settled into our new place.

I just need to tell myself that the gym is for ME. Time for ME to spend getting healthy and losing weight. And maybe my compromise with BF and his cooking is that two days a week during the week I get to cook something healthy. I found a lot of recipes in The Biggest Loser cookbook that are delicious. That way if I eat a healthy breakfast and lunch, then on the couple of other days that BF cooks, I can eat foods that are a little more caloric while still losing weight.

I also have already told BF that I am instituting the “salad rule” after the bar. At the beginning of the week, I will wash and cut a bunch of lettuce, along with chop up lots of fresh veggies in advance of the week. Every night with dinner we will have a salad on the side of whatever we are eating.

Hopefully in the 3 ½ months before my birthday I will start to see some progress and work towards the goal that I set for myself in my last year of my 20s.

Parents can be funny

So after hearing from some of you on whether BF should ask my parents for permission to marry me, I decided to just go ahead and email my mom and ask her what she thought. My parents will be paying for the wedding, so what if that was important to them? My mom was at the family function this past weekend, but didn't get to voice her opinion on the subject.

Her response?

Haven't you heard? Where the father of the bride is not providing the requisite number of sheep, goats and quilts, the need to ask for the bride's hand is waived.

Ha ha. My mom is great.

Always on my mind...

I never was the type of girl to dream of my wedding when I was younger. I was too busy playing sports and being a tomboy to do so. A number of my friends got hitched soon after college while I was busy living it up. I'm glad that I had the time to find myself...never settling for a job that I didn't like and never settling for a boy that I wasn't truly interested in.

But when BF came around? My outlook started to change. I could actually see a future of settling down. I had found a man who actually knew what he was doing with his life, he had goals, ambitions! He was smart, funny, and strong (as in he didn't put up with my sh*t). He was the first guy I dated where I didn't have to pay for everything (ohhhh a steady job!). I could see the way he interacted with his neice and nephew. The old non sequitur chica from high school that proclaimed that she was never having kids because they were too needy? Suddenly felt much different.

As our relationship got stronger, I knew that he was the man for me. I started to think about what our wedding would be like. I started to think about when he would propose. We never really talked about marriage, so the proposal would have to come out of nowhere from him. A number of our friends got engaged and married, while we were simply BF and non sequitur chica. We decided to plan a trip to Hawaii for two weeks right before my last semester of law school. Everyone was convinced that he was going to propose. According to friends and family because we lived together and had been dating for two years, why wouldn't he propose? I had my doubts. It was a very romantic trip, but no proposal.

After Hawaii, we did talk about getting married and spending our lives together. But as he put it, he "wasn't in any hurry" to get married. He figured that kids come right after marriage, whereas I see myself wanting to spend a few years as a newlywed before having kids. I started to think that maybe I did gain too much weight in law school and he wanted a skinnier fiancee. So while I secretly hoped that he would propose around graduation, seeing as I was moving to the northeast for him and everyone else that had been with their boyfriends through law school was also getting engaged? It again didn't happen.

And then studying for the bar exam happened. I stopped thinking about getting engaged, and only really worried about studying. Out of nowhere last month, BF started to talk about engagement rings and what I would like one to look like. HUH? We then spent an entire day learning about cuts, clarity, color, and whatever the fourth c is (wow it was less than a month ago and I have already forgotten) at different jewelry stores. At first, going into a store to look at engagement rings was a little weird. The first store even asked BF if he wanted a beer! BF very much enjoyed looking at the diamonds under the microscope and decided that it was his job to do so to try to find imperfections. Ahhhhh the joys of dating an engineer!

I have to say that I was a hell of a lot pickier than I thought I would be. Most bands were too thick, some of the diamonds were too big (not a typical thing to say, huh?), I didn't like the setting, etc. I even thought that the diamond on a solitaire ring looked "lonely." And yes, for the record I did say that out loud. I should have been studying, but this was MUCH more exciting. In the end, I found two rings that I loved. BF is the type of guy that likes to surprise with his presents, so when he asked which ring I liked better? I told him that I loved both and wanted him to surprise me.

The next day at the bar exam class? I didn't want to think about secured transactions or whatever we were learning that day. I wanted to think about getting engaged and when he was going to do it. So I promptly came home that night and told him that I wasn't sure when he was thinking about proposing and even if it was going to be any time soon....but that it didn't need to be said that he couldn't do it before the bar exam. He was a little confused as to why, but I know myself. I am quite the procrastinator. I would want to let everyone know that I was engaged! Instead of studying, I would thinking about bridesmaids, and where I would want the wedding, etc. So, because we haven't talked about it since, I haven't really thought about getting engaged....other than a few fleeting thoughts.

However, two events happened on Saturday that make me think it is going to happen- and SOON. When BF and I were driving to my family function this weekend I was studying my family law (marriage, divorce, child custody, adoption, etc.) notecards for the bar. I remember things better when I read something and then talk about it, so I was telling him all about family law (poor guy). He suddenly interrupts me and asks, "do I have to ask your parents for permission to marry you?" I thought about it for a little bit and decided that he didn't. I think that it is an old-fashioned thing. It always makes for a good story when the father gives the potential fiance a hard time, but really? If I love BF and want to spend the rest of my life with him why does he need my parent's permission?

But then when I mentioned it to two of my family members at the function, they said that he should. Is this something I should care about? BF doesn't have a particularly close relationship with my parents....partly because he only sees them for short periods of time and partly because my parents are not the most opening and welcoming of people. So that could be a potentially awkward conversation. I guess the only reason I would want him to ask my parents is to find out what he says to them!!

So I really didn't think much of the conversation because we were talking about legal issues that surround marriage at the time, but then after we got home later that night, I picked up the mail. Entertainment Weekly for me (there is a stack sitting on my nightstand waiting to be read until after the bar), a letter from the bar examiners for me, and a "statement enclosed" letter from one of the jewelers addressed to BF. I about fell down. So he went back to the store and has already purchased the ring?

I was actually sad to see that letter. Now I know which ring he has purchased (the two rings that I loved were from different stores). I am of course excited about the ring, but ever since I saw the letter on Saturday? Zero motivation to study for the bar. The damn thing is in SEVEN days people.

But, I might be ENGAGED soon!!!!

BF Background

So I know that I said that I was going to continue my posting on law school and what it is like, but something more exciting (at least for me) came up. First, a little background.....

BF and I have been together for close to three years. We met on match.com. HA HA! I always laugh when I think about it, but our lives were oddly similar before we even met. We grew up in two different regions of the country, but went to the same small college. We even had similar friends, but never knew each other. We both lived in a mid-atlantic city at the same time, but never met. When I started law school, I decided that I was going to hit up match.com to maybe go on some dates, or just find some friends outside of law school.

One day I get a message from BF saying that it was nice to see a fellow alum out west. We spoke over email A LOT for the next couple of weeks, finally deciding to meet at a sports bar to watch our respective football teams play. A few days before we were supposed to meet, he emailed and said that he wanted to keep it as a friend thing. I thought, okay....so he didn't think that I was cute or whatever but he could be a great friend. We ended up hanging out for eight hours that day watching the games and hanging out. I thought he was cute and was sad that he didn't think the same, but thought that we could have a good time as friends in the future. But as he walked me out to my car? He gave me a quick kiss! I was very surprised and even a little bit confused.

Later I found out that because I talked about all of my sports on my profile he didn't think that he would be my type (silly boy...he was an athlete at one time too) and didn't want to get shot down, so he did it first. What a charmer. ;-)

At this point, I was still seeing two other guys at the same time but decided to drop them (although one WAS taking me to football games for free every weekend.....) because hi? I was in first semester of law school and didn't have time to juggle lots of boys. Turns out I made a smart choice. For the next month I would see BF about twice a week so that I would have enough time to study.....boy was it hard dragging myself away though.

Then? About a month and a half into our relationship BF's company told him that they wanted to move him once again. I was sad, but what kind of say do I have after only knowing him for a month and a half? Turns out, he wanted to put his personal life first and told his company that he was staying put as he had met someone (ME!!). I was floored because BF almost lost his job over this decision. Luckily, BF worked it out with his company for him to travel a lot instead of getting fired.

After first year was over, I did a study abroad program in South America. Because I played two sports at a Division 1 college I never had time to do a study abroad program...so I figured that law school was the last time I would ever have a chance to do so. BF was supportive...but that month and a half away from each other was tough because it was too expensive to talk every day and I didn't always have internet access. Luckily, BF's company allowed him to come down at the very end of my program to visit for 10 days.

Soon after starting second year, BF decided that he wanted to buy a place. The place he bought? One block from where I currently lived. For a while we would move from one place to another, towing the dog and usually some cooking ingredients from condo to condo. It was working out great, but then BF's company was making him travel every Monday through Friday. Finally, we decided that it was silly to continue living apart because we spent most of the time together... so I moved into his place and sold my condo.

Fast forward to this summer. BF and I have been living together for over a year. Because he stayed out west for me at the beginning of our relationship, I told him that I would move to where he needed to be for work, as long as it was near a big city so that I could get my dream law job. So that is how we ended up in the northeast.

Things that law school brochures don't tell you (updated)

Because I have now gone and scared La about law school I thought that I would write a post about what law school is REALLY like. Things to expect, things to do before you start, etc. Feel free to email me or comment if you have any questions- I'm happy to answer them!

Suggestions before you enter law school

*Make sure that going to law school is really what you want to do. Take a law class in college. If you are out of college, see if a nearby school has a class that you can take. If it is possible, try to get a job as a paralegal or a legal assistant so that you know what you are getting into.

*Speak to a friend of the family that is a lawyer. Or, if you don't know of anyone see if a law school in your area has any alumni that are willing to talk to prospective law students. While the alum might be biased, it's a good way to (again) know what you are getting into.

*Think very hard about WHY you want to go to law school. Are you just going because you don't know what else you want to do with your life? Because that is not a good reason to go to law school.

*If you do have a reason for going to law school--whether it is wanting to prosecute criminals, save the environment as a environmental lawyer, work on patent law because you were an engineer in college--I would highly recommend picking up US News and World Report to check out what schools are ranked high in your subject area. Look at their LSAT scores, GPA minimums, rank of the law school, etc.

*In addition, some law schools (not mine) offer certificates in certain areas. For example, if you take X number of credits while in law school in patent law, you will receive a patent law certificate. I'm not sure how much a certificate really helps you when looking for a job because I have never heard an employer ask about one...

*Think about the cost of law school. I went to a private law school that cost $30,000 year just in TUITION. Books alone each semester are about $800 new. And obviously that doesn't factor in your living expenses. You are in law school for three years- most people I know came out with $100,000+ in student loans.

*Study for the LSAT. I would recommend taking a class, even though they are expensive. From what I have heard, they really helped people's scores.

*Think about what part of the country you would like to go to law school in. If you are in or near a big city, your living expenses will be higher, but you will have more opportunities for internships, networking, and job prospects. This is also huge because the more you can network during school with local attorneys, the easier it will be to get a job afterwards. It really stinks to try to find a job in a state where you do not know anyone.

*Think about what state you would like to end up in after law school. Some law schools, like those in Louisana, have very state-specific classes. If you head down there for law school and the professors teach state-specific law you might have a problem with the bar exam in a different state. This also goes back to networking and jobs.

*Are you a person that needs to brag about what law school you go to and its rank? Because then you damn well better rock the LSAT and have a great undergrad GPA. Or, do you not care as much and would be willing to go to a lower-ranked school in order to get some scholarship money?

*Are you felon? You may laugh, but most law schools nowadays have a section on their application where you must list any crimes you were convicted of, even if it was just underage drinking. This is because depending on the crime, you may not be able to sit for the bar in certain states because of your past criminal behavior.

*Are you willing to be poor and live off of student loans for 3 years? (some schools do have evening divisions where you work during the day and then go to classes at night for four years) Finding a legal job that pays during the summer is difficult. If you are not at the top of your class and willing to work long hours over the summer at a big law firm the summer after your second year, you probably have to work for free.

*Get everything ready to apply by October. This means your recommendation letters, the applications, the checks for the application fees, etc. There are way too many people trying to get into law school right now. The worst thing you can do is to wait until December or January to apply. Most schools will accept applications starting in the beginning of October. It is in your best interest to apply as early as possible! Even if that means sending everything else in before you take the LSAT!

My story
That all being said, let me tell you all of the things that I did wrong. Luckily, it has all panned out, but I definitely made it harder on myself.

*I did not study for the LSAT, nor did I take a class. I did fine and got into a good law school, but would have had more options, and probably some financial aid.

*I did not know what kind of law I wanted to go into. I knew that I wanted to help people, but uhhh that is pretty damn broad. My parents are lawyers and I was a paralegal for a year before law school so I did know what I was getting into.

*I did not really think about the cost of living or the job opportunities that I might have after school. The city was big enough for me to live in, but not super expensive so I was lucky. I was also lucky because it turns out that the city that I picked was a great place for me to be in for what I eventually figured out I wanted to do. There were tons of opportunities for internships and I took full advantage of them.

*I knew that I would love living in the western state and really thought that I would stay there after law school. But, BF and I had to move east for his job so that foiled my plan. That being said, trying to find a job not located in the western state was tough. I only had time in my last semester to fly out to the northeast once and had to try to pack in interviews over that short weekend. No one knew me and although my law school is pretty big, it does not have a reputation in the northeast. All of my contacts out west didn't really have a lot of people that I could speak to during my trip. So I would say that I spent more time looking for jobs and applying to jobs than actually studying my last semester.

*I worked for free at all of my internships (that would be all 5 of them) during law school because the places I worked didn't have any money to pay me, but I wanted the experience on my resume. It was very frustrating. Luckily my last year I fell into a work study position, but they are hard to get.

*The first year I applied to law school I was disappointed in where I got in. So I decided to work for another year before trying again. Instead of sending in my applications in early January, I had everything ready to go by early October and I got into my #1 school.

This post became really long, so I am going to break this up. Next up? Once you get in to law school, what is it really like?

I have judgments

I will admit to being a judgmental person. We all are, no matter how we much we try not to be. Take today....I am in the library studying because my life consists of THE BAR 24/7. A woman came in with a nice suit on, but her pants were a little too tight. Because of the tightness and because of the light color of the suit, her underwear lines showed. And it really bothered me. Thongs have been around for a long time. Some people aren't big fans of thongs...and thus why the universe has boy shorts. But why didn't this woman look in a mirror before leaving her house today to make sure that she didn't have any panty lines? I'm not even sure why this irked me so much....I'm going to chalk it up to irritability due to having to study for THE BAR. And yes, I have now decided to put it in capital letters because it is going to happen in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS.

*******************************************************

I am very sad that I am missing out on some of my favorite tv shows because of THE BAR. Project Runway started last night! But I didn't get to see Heidi tell someone that they are out. I have been missing Kathy Griffin hanging out on the D List and crazy Jeff Lewis and his flipping of houses. No Big Brother stalking this summer!

I have been watching I Love Money because while I liked to watch Flavor of Love, I Love New York, and Rock of Love? Putting all of those psychos together in one house is about the best damn entertainment out there. Obviously my taste in television is not high brow. But that's what happens when you go to law school- when you are done with classes and studying for the day, you want mindless entertainment. You don't want to (and sometimes can't) actually think!

I make myself feel better about my choice in bad television by pointing to my father who also watches crappy tv and enjoys celebrity gossip because he just doesn't want to think after putting a hard day in at the office (he is a lawyer too).

Two days of hell

I am not looking forward to the upcoming bar exam. I think that I even have it easier than some of my friends taking other states because it is only two days and the state that I am taking it in does not require as many subjects for the essay day.

Some symptoms of studying for the bar for two months straight:

*You feel like crying, simply because your brain hurts from trying to force feed it too much information.

*You harken back to your time as a 1L when you and your law school buddies would point out people doing negligent things or joking about the difference between "knowingly" and "recklessly."

*When the fire alarm goes off at the law library, no one gets up to either go outside or to find someone to turn it off because we are all too busy studying.

*At the same time you are wishing that the bar was just over, you are hoping for more time so that you can study.

*You lose the ability to spell or form sentences with the correct words.

*You don't get drunk or really drink at all for two months straight because you need to be up and chipper to study the next morning. This one might have a disasterous effect on the night of the last day of the bar exam when you want to drink your thoughts of possibly failing away. You might turn out to be a very cheap date!

*You glare at people making the slightest sounds in the law library and don't care if it makes you seem like a bitch.

Since I still have 14 days (SH*T ONLY 14 DAYS??!!?) left I'm sure that I will add to this list. Things only get more stressful from here.....

National Parks plug

I just read a sad article on CNN about the National Park System (find it here) and how people are not taking the opportunity to go and see some of the most beautiful sights in the world. Or, if they are going, they are just driving through the park, barely taking time to get out of their car. Growing up in the midwest, we were not close to any national parks. If we took trips as a family, we would go to see relatives in such places like Ohio or Florida. My dad is also not what one would call an "outdoorsy guy."

So, until I had a chance to move out west, I had few experiences in national parks. I have been lucky enough to hit up some of our most famous national parks in the three years I was in law school and I can't wait to go to many more. Below are some of my pictures from my various trips....surprisingly all taken with a Canon point and shoot digital camera!

Old Faithful erupting at Yellowstone, Wyoming

Joshua Tree National Park, California

Haleakala National Park, Maui

Arches National Park, Utah

Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Moose in Denali National Park, Alaska

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Elk in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

[Soapbox rant] Not everyone has the money to fly to see some of these sights. We are lucky to live in such an amazing country as we have national parks, monuments, state parks, and historical sights all over the country! We have mountains, deserts, lush forests, waterfalls, etc. You are truly missing out on some amazing sights and animals if you choose not to visit some of these places in the near future. [end rant]

Superhero power of smell

I believe that I might have the awesome superhero power of smell.

I might have awful vision, and even though I am not yet 30 my hearing seems to be getting worse (or maybe I just tune out my BF at times?), but man are my powers of smell great. I guess that it is to make up for my other senses.

At times it's a cool power. When I am smelling flowers. The smell of nice (but not overpowering) shampoo, perfume, or cologne. The smell of food. Although that last one sometimes it's good because it makes me hungry!

Other times? Like when my BF farts? Or the dog's breath? Or when someone walks by wearing Axe body spray? It's not such a great power to have. And what is really weird about my smelling power is that it doesn't translate to my power of taste. I am not able to pick out different flavors/herbs in a dish as say my mom or BF can.

**********************************************************

On a completely different topic, I picked up keys to our new house this weekend. I can't wait to move in next month! We will actually have a YARD that we don't have to share with anyone else. Although, that does mean doing actual yard work. Hmmm. I don't have what you would call a green thumb. I have killed cacti in the past.

We will also have a spare bedroom for house guests and a garage for both of our cars (which will be great in the winter). This past year we have had none of that back out west so it will be a nice change.

The other thing that will be nice about moving into our new place? I will officially be done with all law-school related work. No more classes and no more studying for the bar exam for two months straight. Of course, I will have to actually PASS the bar exam to make sure that I don't have to study for the bar again, but thankfully my new job does not depend on me passing the bar. That takes quite a weight off. But it will be nice because the entire time my BF and I have been dating I have been in law school. He hasn't known me when I haven't had to worry about finals, homework, my internship, finding a job after graduation, or money issues. I just can't wait to spend good quality time with him at night!

Sticky in some not-so-fun places

I just got back from an awful bikini wax. I hate bad bikini waxes. The past three years I have been going to the BEST waxing place while I was in law school. The waxers were friendly, the service wasn't that expensive ($50 for a brazilian), and the best thing of all? No tipping allowed. So I am at bit spoiled when it comes to waxes. For the past two months while I have been studying for the bar I have had to find a new place as we have temporarily moved to a small town on the other side of the country. The woman is nice enough but leaves wax all over the place when she is done! The wax is currently sticking to my thong and making studying very uncomfortable. Grrrr.

When I first started getting bikini waxes I felt very weird being naked waist-down in front of a stranger. I mean, they see the same stuff all the time, but what if mine looked weird? What makes me think that I would be comfortable spreading my legs for some woman who shines a bright light down there? But I was able to put my thoughts aside and show up every month. After a few years of waxing I was shocked to meet so many women that have never been waxed or are fearful of waxing because of the potential for pain. I can't imagine shaving ever again.... although I am curious to try laser hair removal as in the end it will be less expensive. (sidenote: has anyone had that done? thoughts? yay? nay?)

Waxing results in less hair growing back and it can be a pleasant surprise for men. When my boyfriend (I guess I will from now on shorten this to BF) and I first starting dating he said that he was surprised at first, but then thought to himself something to the tune of "hell yeah" when he realized that I was completely waxed. Tee hee.

On a somewhat related note, I have booked a facial, manicure and a pedicure for the day after the bar exam (July 31st). I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to the day- hopefully I am 1. not too hungover, 2. not crying, and 3. able to relax!

Losing my (blogger) virginity

So I decided to make a blog. I'm not quite sure why...I have been thinking about it for a while but wasn't sure that it was something that I would keep up with. In the end, I decided that it would be like a journal and 5 or 10 years from now it would be fun to look back on the posts. First fact about me? I have an *awful* memory. I had a great childhood, so it's not like I am trying to suppress anything. Yet it's hard for me to remember all kinds of things. Maybe writing stuff down will help.

Things that worry me about blogging? How much information to share with readers. Nasty comments to posts. Although this is quite the narcisstic comment, not having anyone read my blog. Do I even tell my boyfriend about the blog, let alone give him the address? What if I want to vent (I mean....brag) about him?

I have enjoyed reading the blogs of others such as Barbie, These Little Moments, and La (also see the "people who are more interesting than me" section). But has law school taken the fun out of my writing? I guess if no one is reading then I don't have to worry about the information that I share or nasty comments. But my ego will be hurt a bit!

So that short-ass post took me way too long to write. Does anyone else have that problem? Just like with a story you are supposed to catch the reader with the first sentence. Damn I have already failed as a blogger.
