Debating

I am having an internal debate over exercising. Specifically, exercising prior to my surgery.

As of yesterday I have three weeks until my surgery. Not tons of time to whip myself into shape, but three weeks COULD make a difference. I could continue walking the dogs every day (at least a mile) and do something like the 30 Day Shred or Killer Buns and Thighs. My brain KNOWS that the more exercise I put in before the surgery, the easier it will be to get back into exercising when I am cleared to do so. It will probably aid my recovery from the surgery. Not to mention the fact that only a month after surgery CP and I will be in the Bahamas and I’ll have to be in a bathing suit (who’s grand idea was that???).

But my other LAZY brain keeps telling me that three weeks isn’t going to do anything. That I am going to be a blob by the time I get to exercise again anyway….why not relax before the surgery?

Anyone have any insight into working out before surgery? Can anyone give me any inspirational words to get my a** into gear? I clearly have a bunch of reasons why I should but my lazy brain is currently winning…..

I know that if you are exercising, the healing process is quicker and once you are recovered the muscle memory will still be there. So once you get back to it after you get the all clear, it will be easier than if you had not worked out.

Yes, exactly! I say work out and make your recovery easier. Plus it's a great stress reliever!

It will help you burn off any anxiety and stress you might be feeling too! It doesn't need to be intense, even walking the dogs will be worth it, I think!

I wish I could help, I did not exercise at all before my surgery. I figured it was pointless because I can't work out for 8 weeks post-op. You are probably right that it will help you have an easier recovery!

It wasn't until I let go of exercise being a weight loss thing that I found it easier to get motivated to exercise. Now I do it for the energy, mood booster, chance to get outside, etc.

Maybe consider removing weight loss stuff from the equation, esp in the next 3 weeks and see if that makes a difference in motivation?

Good luck - I completely see the frustration in knowing you will be side-lined very soon. :(

I'd say do it - do the Shred or something relatively quick like that. You'll feel better for it - promise! - and it will probably help you heal later.
