Of course, there is a snag to our plans. My sister called me up earlier this week and asked if her boyfriend's mother, uncle, sister, sister's husband and sister's new baby could join us for Thanksgiving.* SIGH. My sister doesn't exactly think these things through ummm EVER and it's extremely frustrating.
CP talked it over and although we think that it could be an absolute disaster, we decided that we would say okay to it. My parents have never met my sister's boyfriend's mom (mom and dad are divorced and supposedly dad is a little crazy). A holiday would be a good time for this to happen as it will be a few short hours when everyone is in a good mood.
Well, almost everyone. CP and I might be tearing our hair out a little more than usual with strangers in our house. I was already going to have to clean for everyone anyway. But I could certainly take shortcuts if it was just family. CP and my mom were already splitting up the cooking duties; it was agreed that I should just try to relax most of the day. However, how Buster will react to the new people in our house is always a question mark. He will be nicely distracted by my sister's dog and hopefully we can get them to play in the backyard a bunch before the new people arrive, but Buster is always iffy around strangers. He is definitely going to bark at them....hopefully it won't last long, they will listen to us when we tell them to just ignore him, and hopefully his bark doesn't scare the baby too much.
But there is also something about feeling comfortable around your family. Yes, I am supposed to be resting and relaxing that day, but even when I was basically on bed rest for the SCH during my first trimester and my FIL, his wife, and CP's aunt and uncle were in town, it was hard to do. I know that it is going to be the same thing come next week. You want to be a good host in your house no matter the circumstances. Having four strangers roll into your house on a holiday makes the relaxing atmosphere disappear.
So yes, we agreed to have the extra people in our house. We made sure to tell my sister numerous times that she MUST help clean up. You see, we have my parents and my sister/her boyfriend over about once a month for Sunday dinner. CP makes a fabulous meal and my mom usually brings dessert. Who cleans up at the end of the night? CP, myself, and my mom. That is not going to fly on Thanksgiving.
Two other things have occurred to CP and me. First, we now have a bunch of baby stuff set up and ready for OUR baby. Now we will have an eight month old (I think) coming into our house and it would make perfect sense for the kid to use the baby stuff that we have in our house. But selfishly, I want to keep these things pristine and new for OUR baby.
The other thing is that my sister and her boyfriend have poo-poo'ed marriage for a while. They have been together for about four years now and have also said that kids are not in their future, thus why get married? They own a condo together and have a dog together, but again, no interest in marriage. But lately, I think the tide may be turning. CP and I think it is very possible that my sister and her boyfriend will steal our baby thunder and get engaged over Thanksgiving. I mean, it would be a good time with his family and my family together, but then again, you have any other day to do it. Not right before I am about to have a baby that CP and I worked so hard for. Then again, maybe it won't happen and our worry of being upstaged will be for naught. But, we could just see my sister and her boyfriend not thinking about anyone else but themselves (which is typical).
So we'll see how Thanksgiving goes. Maybe I'll just try to focus on getting excited for the day afterwards as opposed to the holiday.....
*I almost forgot the best part. Once we agreed to host these people, my sister sent an email to my mom and CP that said, "Oh, and we need to make sure that we make pumpkin pie because X (not sure who) has requested that we have pumpkin pie because it is his/her favorite." Seriously?? Why don't you bring it yourself then!! So now my mom is making two desserts because one of the randoms at our house absolutely needs to have pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. SIGH.

This is going to seem entirely selfish, but seeing as you are pregnant and should be taking it easy, why not have sister's boyfriend's family find other accommodations. That way you'll only have to focus on dinner and then can have some quiet time. After all, you are pregnant and preparing to go through major surgery, so I think that gives you guys a pass.
If you do go ahead with hosting, I certainly would not share your baby's stuff with the visitors. That one shouldn't even be on the radar for people (and frankly they should be making arrangements to bring a pack n play and other necessary materials for their child).
Finally, as far as your sister announcing an engagement: it will be what it will be. But remember too that any thunder stealing won't matter when your baby arrives. So congratulate her on finally reaching this decision, then hand her a dish towel and point her to the kitchen to help you with the clean up.
Ughh thats so annoying! Good for you for saying yes, but what else could you really do in that situation? And I'd totally not share the new stuff for the baby. I'd feel the same exact way. They have an 8 month old, they will have stuff to bring for it. I get all bad juju vibes thinking about another baby playing with something that hasn't been used for your unborn child yet.
Hopefully your sister A) does her part to clean up, especially as half the guests are hers and B) doesn't get engaged. Or if she does, it'll all die over anyway soon enough since BABY trumps engagement ALWAYS.
Yikes, always expect the unexpected. Communication among your sister sounds like it was critical to have this be a success. I hope that it goes well and they respect you and CP's wishes.
The most important thing is the next day it will be baby day!!
Do not under any circumstances share your new baby stuff. They should have the sense to bring there own things especially with the child being 8 months old.
And as someone else said give tour sister the dish cloth/ tea towel and point her in the direction of the kitchen. If you feel uncomfortable get CP or your mom to do it.
I also agree if they want pumpkin pie that badly bring your own how rude!
Yikes! Family can be so....not helpful sometimes. I hope you don't mind my saying so, but your sister sounds really selfish.
I'd feel the same about the baby stuff; you've waited so long to enjoy all this, you deserve to savour every moment and experience, as pristine as possible!
Having said all that, I agree with others...I think with the Main Event the following day, that'll all melt away as you meet your baby! So exciting!
You are so nice. None of that would fly with me.
I would definitely put the baby stuff in the baby's room and close the door. I have always brought toys an supplies for my baby wherever I take her and they should do the same.
You know what, I would say to your sister, great, I will say okay but I need you all to help us clean up and get his house ready for tomorrow, and I would appreciate if maybe while I am out if you can look after my Dogs... etc. Let her know that you are welcoming these people into your home and you would love to have her clean your house as a help because the added stress and being due the next day would be nice to return to a cleaned house! UGH the nerve!
Four extra peoe you've never met plus a baby? Your sister is ballsy! Wow. I also can't imagine, as a guest, REQUESTING tha. You make pumpkin pie!! Excuse me, but what about bringing something to contribute to the meal?? That's what most people do. You and CP are very nice for taking this on the day before your baby arrives! Not only will you be cleaning up thanksgiving dinner, but with that many people and an 8 month old, the rest of your house will be bound to need picking up as well. Don't share the baby stuff!!!! I wouldn't want to do that either.
As for if they decide to get engaged, well, it might steal the thunder of Thanksgiving, but in no way will it upstage you having your baby. My opinion is that there is no comparison between the two. Bringing a new baby into the world is WAY more.... Impactful than an engagement. I can't think of the right word. Of course everyone will be excited and happy for them. But you will be stealing THEIR thunder right back the very next day!
You are really generous and making me thankful that Husband and I do not have siblings. Echoing others, yes no requests -you invite other guests than bring more food. you can pick up a pie from anywhere. Don't share your baby stuff, they shouldn't expect you to provide any items for them. Oh good luck with all this!
Wow.You are a better person than me. I'm not sure I would have agreed to that. Good luck.
I can't believe that not only are these strangers not offering to contribute to the meal,, but they are making requests. Crazy.
I agree with the others - don't share you baby stuff. The other parents should come prepared and not expect you to provide anything. And you shouldn't feel obligated just because it's there. Your baby should absolutely get to use all of it first.
I give you so much credit. I would not put up with strangers at my house last minute especially if I was about to have a baby! I'm shocked that the boyfriend's family is okay with this plan given the circumstances.

I would feel so weird and imposing if I were a member of your sister's boyfriend's family! Ack! What a mess of a situation and what an awkward position your sister put you in.
Wishing you a good Thanksgiving and keep in mind it's well within your rights/limits to set your foot down whenever you need to! It's your house and you are the one whose life is in a major transition place! Do what you need to do, even if that means calling off plans and moving everyone to your parents house or even your sister's condo. Good luck with everything and especially with the big baby day! Really excited for you :)
