Mental checkup

This afternoon will be my first visit with a therapist.  As this infertility journey has dragged on, I have slowly picked up more avenues for support.  Telling some family and some friends, the RESOLVE monthly group, and of course, blogging.

I have yet to see a therapist- until today.  I have certainly thought about it and have definitely taken into consideration some of your comments on my posts.  I know that a lot of you see therapists yourself.  The problem is I don't really see myself as depressed.  Sure I have some bad days where I am unhappy, exhausted, and not motivated at all.  But most of the time I am fairly content with my life because I know that I am lucky in so many ways.  Although it certainly sucks that I have never seen a positive pee stick, I do think that has kept me from a lot of emotions that other infertile women tend to have after losing a pregnancy.

But as this IVF cycle gets closer, I really want to make sure that my mind is ready, along with my body.  I keep thinking back to Alice Domar's book and the studies that she cited on depression harming a women's chances of conceiving.  Therapy is covered under CP's insurance and so we'll see how it goes.

.....No Valentine's Day post for me.  I'll talk to CP tonight on the phone, but he's not back from Colombia until late Friday night.  Buster and Fuzzy Britches will have to be my Valentines tonight.

Hoping that talking to a therapist helps. I love the idea of it and have seen it help so many couples and individuals out there. Definitely can't hurt going into a new cycle!

I have been thinking about going to a therapist as well. I suppose I should have done it sooner but I just keep having a hard time picking up the phone and making the appointment. Hope it goes well for you.

I don't think you need to be depressed in order to see a therapist.

I think it's fantastic to get an objective point of view from someone outside your personal life, and your therapist may ask questions that you never even thought about. It's definitely a positive thing! Good luck!

I agree with Stevie - you don't have to be depressed to see a therapist. You are going through a lot, and about to add heavy IVF hormones to the mix. I would think of this as an almost precautionary step. I can say with absolute certainty that I wish I had taken it myself. i hope you have a good connection with this therapist and that you find a safe place to find unbiased support. Sometimes just having a neutral party to talk to is worth its weight in gold.

And happy quiet Valentine's Day to you. It's just the cats and I too!

I hope your therapist is a good fit that can provide some useful coping mechanisms as you move forward with your IVF! I'm glad you are making the effort. I'm a big advocate of therapy and I think even the happiest, balanced of individuals would benefit!

I hope going to the therapist helps. I finally went (for 3 visits, paid by work) during out last IVF cycle which was almost 3,5 years into TTC. The therapist was decent and somewhat helpful, but I just didn't feel her personality clicked with mine and thus not as useful as she could have been. If the first doesn't seem to fit, look for a new one until one does fit and help.

Even if you don't think of yourself as depressed, it surely won't help to have someone to talk to. I haven't been to therapy in many years, but I know it helped when I did go, just to know that someone was hearing me, even if I was paying them.
