Disappointed

Disappointment is the word of the day. Yep, my monthly friend came today. Not being pregnant is on my mind, but I am not stressing or fretting over it. Who knows...after 20 years of ovulating each and every month maybe my body decided to take a month off (women don't necessarily ovulate every month)? Maybe our timing wasn't right? (note: we aren't actually timing anything. Before I even went off the pill CP said that he doesn't want to schedule things or have our experience seem like the scene in "Election" where Matthew Broderick and his wife are having sex and she is screaming "Fill me up! Fill me up!" because they are trying to get pregnant. Not quite a turn on.) Nothing we can do about it now and we will just continue to "practice" and hope for the best next month. :-)

Meanwhile, when exactly are you supposed to give up things for a pregnancy? Do you live your life and then when you find out you are pregnant that is when you change things? (I'm not talking about alcohol here- I have continued to drink once in a while but haven't been going crazy.) For instance, for a couple of years I have been dyeing my hair to get rid of my grays. Although my stylist uses a product that does not have any ammonia in it, it is possible that if I was pregnant my doctor would tell me not to have it done. Same thing with sushi. I know that most people don't eat raw fish during their pregnancy (even if women in Japan do it ALL the time). Is dyeing my hair or eating sushi something that I need to stop doing for the two weeks where we possibly could have gotten pregnant and I'm just waiting to find out?

The last time I got my hair dyed was in early June so I'm coming up on needing it done again. And sushi? Well, I'm heading out to lunch today with my friend to have some. Can't wait. But really, can anyone shed any light?

On a related note, this past weekend I came across the website www.Everybodybirths.com. I was so fascinated with reading various birth stories that I sat down with my iTouch and read all of the stories. Very interesting.

I know the feeling, whil ewe are not there yet, I am doing all that I can to prep for when we decide to start.

I love that website, very interesting. I just adore OMGMom.

My sis dyed her hair about a week ago, and she's pregnant...she wanted non-gray for post delivery. Whatever dye she uses (she does it herself) is non-ammonia and doctor approved (or midwife approved).

Pretty much everything I've read about pregnancy says that dyeing your hair is totally fine throughout pregnancy, and the tiny bit of chemicals that come through your scalp aren't enough to harm the baby. As far as sushi, etc., I think the only concern there is about bacteria/food poisoning with the fetus and the compromised immune system, so if you aren't pregnant yet, you don't really have to worry.

Good luck! I hope this happens for you very soon.

So sorry :-( Here's hoping it'll happen soon for you guys!

The most important thing is for you to just stay as healthy as you can and keep the negative stressors out as much as possible.

Aw, sorry it's not your month:(

Just wanted to let you know that I wrote you a small novel of a response about sushi during the two week wait in the comments section of the post: http://navigatingthemothership.blogspot.com/2010/07/pre-preggo-bucket-list-updated.html

And I think the choice to follow pregnancy rules or not during the two-week-wait can vary so much from woman to woman. Honestly, for me it's the fact that I feel guilty SO VERY EASILY that has me avoiding everything. Thank you Catholic upbringing for that! :) But the actual risk to the fetus from things like sushi/hair dye/a beer or two? Probably super tiny if at all.

I'd like to echo what Jess said re. hair dyeing and sushi. But, what I want to add is, have a talk with your doctor or midwife or whomever you will have along for your pregnancy journey. Sweets and I met with my doctor well before we started trying to get pregnant and asked questions similar to those. His basic response was, don't worry about what might happen in those two weeks and adjust your schedule accordingly afterward.

My feeling is live your life while you can! I wouldn't go and have sushi every single day, nor would I go get tanked multiple nights per week. But have fun while you're trying to get pregnant - have a glass of wine or two:)

And coloring your hair shouldn't be a big deal as long as you inform them. They just have to be careful about which products to use.

I went through the same thing with the two week wait, and eventually I got really discouraged from acting like I was pregnant for weeks, just to find out that I'm wasn't pregnant. At that point, I just stopped worrying about it. Those two weeks don't really make much of a difference in the big scheme things if you are pregnant, so I would say not to deny yourself things like sushi or hair dye. There will plenty of time for that later! ;-)
