Once a month our neighbor also teaches a class at the local library for signing with babies. Last month was our first time going and although Izzy was one of the older kids, she was also one of the only ones that already had signs under her belt. At the class my neighbor talked about all of the good things that signing has done for her kids- including helping her to potty train all three boys before the age of 20 months.
I was shocked. Don't boys take longer? And before the age of 2? My friend that has twins is still trying to get her almost-3.5 year old very stubborn girl to potty train! After the class I went back to the book she gave me and did some research. Up until the 1960s before disposable diapers were invented, most babies were potty trained by 18 months- now the average is more like 46 months! The diaper companies are certainly happy about that, but not the environment!
After I brought it home Izzy and I checked it out. She thinks the lights and the "yay" sound are awesome. She was willing to sit on the toilet for about a minute but I didn't push it. Now we work on the "bathroom" sign (already in process) every time we change her diaper and then the "wash" sign and slowly work on sitting on the toilet more often. I would LOVE to have her potty trained within the next few months. I need to make sure that daycare works on this as well.....

That looks awesome! My friend gave her daughter a little present from the dollar store to unwrap every time her daughter had dry panties. I forget how often she was checking but it seemed to work!

Honestly, I am not interested in potty training Annika for at least a year, probably 1.5 years from now (she is currently 15 months). In my experience, there is a REALLY big difference between potty trained and potty independent. In the former category, the baby might know how to use the toilet, but it requires huge effort and involvement on the parents' part for a long period of time. That, to me, is so much more hassle than just changing diapers. I don't really see an upside. We trained Callum at 28 months, which was much earlier than I otherwise would have because he needed to be trained for preschool, and while it was quick, it was still a while - until at least age three - before he was able to really use the bathroom independently, know that he had to go, not have to be reminded, etc. And I've also heard that in general, the older the baby, the easier and quicker the training. I also found this article very interesting: http://www.babble.com/toddler/dangers-potty-training-early/. my plan for Annika is to start with the three-day training approach in the summer of 2016, when she will be 2.5 years old and it will be warm enough for her to run around naked while she learns. That's what we did with Callum and it worked very well.
Not saying it's bad... just that I don't know that it's worth your time and effort, both now and over the next couple of years as you work to maintain the training.
Jess- I read the article and will definitely look more into it but to me, the article doesn't make any sense. Late training is now the norm and there are more constipation/UTI issues than when early training was the norm. People around the world still train their babies early and don't have any problems. Maybe the constipation and other health issues are due to kid's diets these days?
I think that fact is fascinating and yet it makes so much sense.
That really is the cutest little potty seat I've ever seen! I've heard of people being successful with early potty training. Good luck! I am definitely not looking forward to that stage myself.
