Today is the day that I have been waiting for.
The past three months have all been for this day.
My LAST DAY OF WORK in DC.
Today is the last day of being bored out of my skull. Of perusing The Knot. Of checking out people’s updates on Facebook. Of logging onto Holly's Inbox. Of waiting for Jonathan Lee Riches © to write more funny lawsuits. And of clicking on my Google Reader in hopes that someone else posted something for me to read.
It is the last day that I have to deal with my crazy boss. The last day of feeling bad for my coworkers because I get to leave this h*llhole filled with toxic mold and they do not.
Tonight is the last night that I will sleep alone in a bed (at least until CP’s bachelor party). The last night that I will have to fend for myself for dinner. The last night that I don’t get a big hello from Fuzzy Britches after arriving home from work. The last night that I don't have the tools I need to make delicious dishes for Whip It Up.
Tomorrow I drive back to our home in MA. I hope for no traffic, despite the holiday coming up on Friday.
Happy days!!!! :-)

Whip it Up- Week #1
This is the first week of Whip it Up 2009!

This week I decided to try a recipe for Curried Corn Soup! I am obsessed with corn and even though it is hot out these days, I can always eat soup!
Ingredients:
2 tsp olive oil
1 cup onion, chopped
2 tsp curry powder
4 cups fat-free chicken broth
4 pieces corn on the cob (about 3 cups)
1/2 pound uncooked red potatoes, peeled and chopped (about 2 large potatoes)
1 1/2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup cilantro or scallion, chopped
1/4 cup plain fat-free yogurt
1/4 cup tomato, diced
NOTES: I added about two cups of cooked chicken to the recipe for some protein. I also decided to use scallions, instead of cilantro.
Instructions:
Heat oil in a large saucepan. Add onion; cover and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add curry powder and cook 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add broth, corn, potatoes, lemon juice and salt to saucepan; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, partially covered, until potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes; remove from heat.
In a blender, food processor or using an immersion blender, puree mixture (in batches if necessary), until smooth. Strain soup through a fine mesh sieve into a large serving bowl, pressing on solids to extract as much liquid as possible; discard solids.
To serve, stir cilantro or scallions into soup. Top each serving with 2 teaspoons each of yogurt and tomato. Garnish with additional chopped cilantro or scallions, if desired. Serve hot or cover and refrigerate up to 2 days. Yields about 1 1/4 cups per serving.
NOTES: Since I am still in DC, I don't have access to a blender, food processor or an immersion blender. No biggie! When the 20 minutes of simmering was up, I put the scallions in, topped it off with yogurt and served!

Difficulty Level: Easy
Taste: This wasn't an amazing soup, but it tasted good enough. Plus it is really low in calories and fat!! To add more flavor I would use some of CP's chicken stock as opposed to canned chicken broth, I would add a bit more salt, and probably a bit more curry. However, it was a filling soup that I enjoyed eating!
Would I make it again: If I was the only person eating it, then yes. I don't think that CP would find this dish exciting enough though. :-)

Trying to look busy....
Unfortunately I am ridiculously bored at work. As in, I have nothing to do. Literally nothing. I know that there are a ton of people out there that are extremely busy and let me say, I wish that I was you. I wish that I was running around, tearing my hair out. That would be preferable to my current state of trying to look busy.
I googled “things to do when you are bored at work” (not on my work computer of course!) and the suggestion “google your boss” came up. Ha ha! So I did. :-) Some of the links that came up could not possibly be my boss, but it was funny to invent stories to try to make them fit! However, this only took up about 5 minutes of my time as I am not very creative. Damn.
I constantly have things running through my head like, “if I wait until 1pm to have lunch, then when I get back at 2pm I only have 2.5 hours to entertain myself.” Yep, it’s that sad.
The one thing that I found to amuse myself yesterday? Read the various lawsuits filed by Jonathan Lee Riches © (yes, he claims his name is copyrighted). This guy is AWESOME. I seriously want to film a documentary on him or something. You don’t have to be a lawyer to appreciate this guy. He has filed over 1,000 lawsuits, mainly on people in the news. His greatest lawsuit was one that named 783 defendants- including George Bush, the Magna Carta, Skittles candy, http://www.accuweather.com/, the Garden of Eden, and World World 11 (yes 11, not II). To see the rest of the defendants, go here.
Some of my favorite lawsuits from him include:
Michael Vick- He claims that Vick stole two of his dogs to use for dog fighting, then sold those dogs on E-bay and “used the proceeds to purchase missiles from the Iran government.” In addition, Vick subjected him to microwave testing. Riches ends up pleading with the court for Vick to “stop physically hurting my feelings and dashing my hopes.” Classic!
Louisiana State University- Apparently LSU wears yellow jerseys that blind opponents, is in cohoots with FEMA to give gourmet meals to football players instead of Katrina victims, and conspires with FEMA to give players bread loafs with steroids and cheese laced with “HGH and McGuire’s 1998 Andro.” The best part about this one? The last two sentences- “Defendants also get home field advantage that gives Louisiana more money. Just like the conspiracy last year giving the New Orleans Saints to play in the NFC Championship game after cheating against the Philly Eagles.” Funny AND an Eagles fan? I’m in LOVE.
No Child Left Behind Act-Riches is apparently upset because when he was a child “the short bus left me behind (HA HA HA HA), and put its exhaust to my face, thats why we have global warming.”
Bill Belicheck-This lawsuit accuses Bill Belicheck of installing video cameras in Foxboro Stadium and then having a monthly contract to sell the footage to Idaho Senator Larry Craig. LOL. And in case I needed any more evidence of Riches’s love of the Eagles? “Defendants cheated during the 2005 Superbowl against the Philadelphia Eagles. Before the game Tom Brady put a recording device in Donovan McNabb’s chunky soup. He ate it.” Great stuff I tell you!
Isiah Thomas- Amongst other complaints, Riches says the following occurred on February 10, 2007: “I received inappropriate sexual photos of Isiah Thomas in the mail of him dancing on a pole at New York Scores nightclub, pictures of Isiah Thomas eat a banana, pictures of Isiah Thomas in a leathers sailor outfit (LOL). I never asked Isiah to send these pictures, when I told him to stop, he kept giggling.” Seriously? Where does this guy come up with this stuff?
Daniel Day Lewis- Clearly Riches did NOT like the “Gangs of New York” movie as he asks for $7.73 + tax for the emotional trauma inflicted by watching the movie. He claims that Lewis’s mom is (now former) Supreme Court Judge Sandra Day (O’Connor), and his father was sprinter Carl Lewis. The most outrageous part of the short claim? That Lewis now drinks wine with Riches’ red blood cells. ?????
For being stuck in a Federal Prison (for such things as credit card fraud), Riches sure keeps up on his current events! My guess? He is extremely bored in prison and doesn’t have anything else to do. Maybe I should start writing bogus lawsuits at work? That might pass the time a little faster…… ;-)

Tune in Tokyo
How many of you think that you are wearing the correct bra size? Before this weekend, I would have raised my hand. According to a quick internet search including this Time Magazine article, about 70-80% of women wear the wrong bra size. And until Sunday, I would have been included in that high percentage.....
After my mom and I got pedicures on Sunday, she wanted to stop by Nordstrom’s to look for something. We happened to go into the lingerie dept and I mentioned that I wasn’t really a huge fan of my current bras because although they were minimizers, my boobs constantly would fall out the bottom of the bra. Surely there was something else I could wear that was a better fit.
When we walked over to the register, the woman working asked if I wanted to get measured and I thought, why not? It had probably been 10-15 years (!!!!) since I had been measured …
The woman quickly informed me that my current bras of 38DD and 40DD were not my correct size. Turns out, I am a 36DDD otherwise known as a 36FF. WHAT??!??? I totally didn’t believe her so when she left to go find a few styles for me to try on, I measured myself!! I couldn’t fathom that I was still the same size around my chest after gaining the weight I did in law school.
Holy f I have big boobs!!!! So, all of my current bras will go to the Salvation Army and I have 4 new ones in the correct size for the time being. *sigh* No wonder it’s hard to find things that fit!!!!!
The moral of the story? Even if you have small boobs, get checked at a local department store or nice bra store to make sure you are wearing the correct size! I can’t tell you what a difference my new bras make! I haven’t had to stuff either boob back into place when hitting up the bathroom- something that happened quite frequently just a week ago. :-)
Did I convince you to go out and get your correct bra size yet???

Shower
This weekend was the first of two bridal showers for me this summer. My lovely mother flew in from Chicago for the weekend and it was great to see her! The hosts were my maid of honor J and an old family friend that I call “aunt” even though we are not related. It was a fairly intimate affair which I originally thought would look weird or sad, but it ended up being really nice. My aunt and J made all of the food- including a delicious caramel pecan cheesecake (YUM!). When my aunt asked what my favorite food was, I’m pretty sure she wasn’t expecting me to answer “corn.” Ha! She was a trooper though- putting corn in not one, but two of the dishes!

As a really cute touch, she asked my mom to send her old pictures of me in advance so that she could frame them and put them around the table. Some of them were hilarious! It was funny for my friends to see them as my oldest friend there was J and she has only known me since freshman year in college. My aunt also ordered M&Ms that said “NSC and CP” or “CP and NSC” on them which was a cute touch.

After the delicious lunch I started to open presents. There was a catch though- J had called CP earlier that week with predetermined questions and for every question that I got right, I then got to open a present. Since I had consumed a few champagne glasses by this point, I had a fantastic time babbling on with stories relating to the questions.
All in all, a really good time. CP’s mom and sister have planned another one for me in August- hopefully it’s just as fun!*
*Although there really is no need for TWO bridal showers. Oh well.

Today’s Likes and Hates
Like: That my mom is coming into DC tonight.
Hate: That Chicago is having storms and her flight was cancelled. Now she is on a later flight and we had to push back dinner at a tapas restaurant to 9pm. Although, now I have time to work out before my mom gets in….
Like: The fact that I was able to get my hair cut yesterday.
Hate: That instead of the two inches I asked to get taken off, the lady took off more like three or four!! Now my hair is much shorter than usual. CP even joked that if it is too short, then he wants the ring back. Lovely joke sweetie- definitely NOT helping.
Like: That my bridal shower is tomorrow and that it will be low-key (i.e. not at a restaurant, not catered, etc.)
Hate: That so many people weren’t able to make it. L
Like: That I have security in my job.
Hate: That I am ridiculously bored every day. I have barely had a lick of work to do for the past two weeks. Even when I rotate back up to my Northeast office, I am worried that I am not going to have enough work and/or the work is not going to be stimulating enough. *sigh*
Like: That CP was understanding on the phone last night while I cried and complained about being so bored at my job.
Hate: That I am once again lost at what I want to do with my life. I thought that I had it all figured out in law school- I knew what sector I wanted to go into, I got this amazing fellowship, etc. But now? I’m lost. And I HATE that feeling. I’m 30 freakin’ years old. What the heck am I going to do with my life when my fellowship is over??????
Like: Boy shorts underwear!! I randomly bought a pair at Target (they were only $2 and I thought I would try them out) and thought they were awesome! I went back to buy more!!
Hate: That I can’t wear them with some of my pants because you can still see the line.
What are your likes and hates today?

Blogging
Thanks for all of the nice comments yesterday. You know when you just have a crappy day and need to vent your crazy feelings? That was me yesterday. I did end up going to the gym and running/ walking for 60 minutes, along with eating healthy things so I felt much better by the end of the day.
I originally wrote this post a couple of days ago, but writing about my feelings yesterday and then having such nice comments makes it so hard to think about not writing anymore. Does CP want to hear about my crazy thoughts? Probably not.
--------------------------------------------
If CP ever found out I wrote a blog, here is how I imagine the conversation will go:
CP: Umm so I found out that you are writing a blog. Why would you want to do that?
NSC: It’s kind of like having a diary, except online. It’s been fun to chronicle planning for our wedding and other life events.
CP: Why not just keep a private diary instead of putting our lives out there on the internet for all to see?
NSC: Well, I am very careful to not give away too much information about our lives. So far I think that I have done a good job of protecting our identities. I tell specific stories, but when identifying information comes into play, I generalize it.
CP: I just don’t understand why you feel the need to do that.
NSC: Well, you know that I have been reading blogs for a while. You have even made fun of me for doing it in the past. Then last summer, when I needed a break from studying for the bar, I started my own. I enjoy it.
CP: grumble, grumble, grumble, etc.
I hope that I never have to have this conversation with CP. I’m not sure what I would do if he found out about the blog. I know that he would be mad. He already thinks that I put too much information on Facebook. (In my defense, I don’t put pictures up of us drunk or other embarrassing photos. I try to I stick to the “grandmother” rule- I would be okay with my grandmother (if either of them were alive of course) checking out my Facebook site.)
I hate keeping something like this from him, but wouldn’t be able to write about our relationship if I knew he was reading. I’m not even sure he WOULD read if he knew about it. All I know is that he would be mad that I was putting stuff about us on the internet for people to read (even if these people are strangers). Would it make it better in his mind if I started to meet other people that blogged? Who knows.
I’m not sure how to reconcile this. I hate him not knowing, but worry that someday he is going to find out and be really pissed. I mean, putting our stories out there does affect him too. I don’t want to stop blogging as I think that it is a good outlet for my thoughts and feelings. Plus, I have an awful memory and now I can go back through my archives to find the stories that I forget! :-) Oh decisions, decisions.

Crappy feelings
I finally saw a picture of one of CP’s good friend’s new fiancĂ©. She was pretty and thin. All of CP’s good friends have pretty and thin (or fairly thin) wives or girlfriends. Two of them have even pushed out two kids but then busted back into shape. And then there is me. I wonder if CP sometimes gets annoyed that he doesn’t have a thin fiancĂ©?
He has been able to quickly lose the 25 pounds he wanted and despite bringing back more bad food and alcohol into his diet, still manages to stay at his new weight. This is despite the fact that he hasn’t been the gym in over a month.
While at home last weekend he got annoyed that I didn’t have any alcoholic drinks with him at dinner. In my mind, I wanted to save the calories….but I didn’t tell him that. I just said that I didn’t feel like drinking with dinner.
I lost a few pounds over the past two weeks by watching what I ate and exercising a few times. That “few times” needs to grow into a larger number. Watching what I eat also needs to continue. I want CP to be proud to stand next to me on our wedding day. I will never be a size 2….or even a size 6, but a size 8 or 10 would be nice. I am running out of time to be a skinnier bride on my wedding day. I am even running out of time to look skinnier in our engagement pictures (we take them at the end of July).
CP didn’t have a lot of girlfriends through the years. The last girl he dated (it was serious enough to bring her home for Christmas one year, meet his family and some of his friends) was skinny. Like, really skinny. Even though he broke up with her (his reason? “She was stupid”) and hasn’t talked to her since before we started dating, she is the only reference point I have to what he finds attractive. And I am literally the complete opposite. She wore a lot of makeup, I don’t (sidenote: I am worried about having my wedding makeup trial because I’m pretty sure that I am going to think that I look like a clown). She was skinny, I am not. I do consider myself fairly smart though, so I guess that I “win” in that area. Annnnd because he never talks about her, that’s about all I have to compare.
Why am I worried about this right now? I have no idea. He proposed which means he at least somewhat likes the way that I look since he will have to see me for the rest of our lives. Still, he quickly lost the weight and I am lagging behind (damn moving to DC and getting off my schedule!). His friend’s wives are all skinny AND successful/ smart. I have only mastered half of that. It’s the same thing with my friends. I have ALWAYS been the heaviest person out of all of my friends. It’s not fun.
So what to do about my current (and obvious) lack of self-esteem? Hopefully not try to eat my way out of it. Hopefully not break out into “crazy” talk to CP. I don’t know, today I just really feeling like crying.

Have some down time?
When reading one of my old Entertainment Weekly magazines yesterday (I didn’t get them forwarded to my DC address) I came across one of their suggestions on a new book called Holly’s Inbox.
From Amazon review:
Denham’s novel, written entirely in e-mails, began as a serialized Web site, www.hollysinbox.com. The story revolves around Holly Denham, the new receptionist at a London bank, and through her correspondence, readers get to know her daily life. She befriends Trish, the other receptionist, and begins a relationship with James, a charming higher-up. Between organizing meetings at the bank, she trades hilarious, risquĂ© e-mails with her friends Jason and Aisha, assures her parents she’s getting along well, helps her grandmother decipher the Internet, and offers her siblings much-needed advice. Her e-mails even reveal a life-altering event from her past. While the premise can be tiresome—who doesn’t have to slog through enough e-mails of their own?—the story becomes more engrossing as fresh details come to light. The author, a placement-agency owner writing under a pen name, explores a new format with compelling results. A second novel is planned, and Holly’s adventures continue online. --Aleksandra Walker
Basically, the author (a man!) had an employee that was very similar to Holly. As soon as she started her job, she started to send out racy emails to coworkers, friends, and family. When she was fired, the company went through her email and found all of them. The author then decided to start his own website….which then turned into the book. The book sounds like a fun read and I might check it out. In the meantime though, you can go to the website and read almost two months of emails. Don’t worry- the emails aren’t long and there are not a ton of them. I think that they get updated every weekday?
Happy reading!

Busy bees
This past weekend was my last visit home before I am back PERMANENTLY. Only two weeks until I sleep in my bed every night, until I am nudged awake by Fuzzy Britches every morning, until I get to wake up CP when he snores in my ear, until I get to taste CP's yummy food every day, until I have a normal boss again, and until life is back to freakin' NORMAL. I can't wait.
Meanwhile, this is what CP has been busy with while I have been gone:

The other half of CP's herb garden (doesn't CP have a cute leg? ;-) )
(mmmm thai basil, chervil, garlic chives and more!!)
Addressing our invitations!
(sorry about the pens, I don't have photoshop)
The "Red Sox" font

Herb garden by CP
(check out that thyme, sage and rosemary- YUM!)

Other than going out to dinner for CP's birthday on Saturday night, this is what we have been busy with all weekend:
Addressing our invitations!(sorry about the pens, I don't have photoshop)
Setting up the addresses to print on CP's work printer took a while. We had to find two fonts that looked similar to the ones used on our invitations and then set up the unusual-sized envelope. Every single invitation had the two fonts shown above.....except for one.
The "Red Sox" fontCP just couldn't help himself. He installed the Red Sox font a couple of years ago when we went to a Red Sox world series game (he made two huge dice with "K"s on every side as Dice-K was pitching that night- my boy is creative!). He knows that my friend Matt is a ridonkulous Red Sox fan (as is CP) so he thought that he would use the special font for their invitation. I think that Matt is going to love it!

Half of the back of the invitation
I was going to show you guys the invitation, but started to use way too many pens before taking the picture with my Blackberry (sorry for the overall poor picture quality- damn BB!), so I gave up. Stupid anonymous blogger hang-up!
Anyway, before jumping on the plane last night, CP and I finished putting together the invitations, addressing them (i.e. putting them through the printer), sealing them, stamping them, and putting the cute gold leaf sticker on the back. Now all CP has to do is to drop them off at the post office!
Even though the invitations didn't take as long as I feared, I am pretty proud that we are so on top of things! If CP sends the invitations out this week, guests have over two months to RSVP.....which could mean that people will lose everything.....

Be the Match
I had been flirting with signing up to be a bone marrow donor for a while, since I already give blood on a regular basis. However, I had balked at paying the $50 sign up fee.....at least until my finances were a little better.
Then I came across Confession of a Jersey Girl's website. Right now, the bone marrow donor program is running Marrowthon through June 22nd. It's a great way to sign up- for FREE!
Here is some more information found on CJG's post:
Be The Match (formerly National Marrow Donor Program), helps facilitate the coordination of searching cancer, or pre-cancer, patients with bone marrow donors. Their registry is a place where suffering patients can go and try to find a matching marrow donor who would give them a bone marrow transplant. For many people searching for marrow, their only chance for survival is finding a perfect match on the registry. Ordinarily it costs about $50 to join the registry to become a potential donor, but during the Marrowthon, June 8-22, joining is free. And it is really, really easy.
Joining the registry doesn’t mean you have to give blood or anything with needles. All you do is swab the inside of your cheek with a long Q-tip. I’ve done it, and it’s completely painless. You can even join from home and do the whole thing yourself. By joining the registry you basically say that you are willing to donate marrow to a recipient if you are ever matched up, which in itself is an extremely rare occurrence. The vast majority of people who are on the registry never get called. Even if you do get matched up, all you do is donate some blood and help save a life. No needles in the hip (it’s not 1950 anymore).
To sign up, log on here, answer a questionnaire, and Be The Match will send over a swab kit in about 3-5 days. All you do is swab your inner cheek, place the swab in a sealed bag and mail it back.
Steve, Cynical Sympathy
What are you waiting for? You could save a life!!

Another plug
My interest in National Parks is well documented on this blog. Early on in this blog, I wrote a post lamenting that attendance was down at National Parks. At that point, I probably had maybe one reader? :-)
This past fall, when trying to make a decision on which charities to give to, I decided that the National Parks Foundation was something that was very important to me.
My latest plug for National Parks is this story– that the National Park Service has waived the park fee on three different weekends this summer.
So what are you waiting for? If you haven’t made plans for a summer trip, why not go June 20-21, July 18-19 or August 15-16 to a National Park? I am thinking that on the 21st of this month, I might hit up Shenandoah or Great Falls before I leave the DC area!
Are you planning to visit any National Parks this summer?

Decreasing my bank account
Along with my fantastic wedding purchase I talked about last week, I also bought these three items:

Isn't it adorable? I really like the purse because it is big enough for all of the crap that I lug around every day! This is my fourth Nine West purse in a row.....I think that I might have a Nine West problem!
Kelly & Katie Twisted Up Patent Thong

Kelly & Katie Twisted Up Patent ThongI actually ended up buying this shoe in black, but the red is super cute too. While the heel on this shoes is a little shorter than I would like, maybe my feet will feel better towards the end of the night? :-)
Last weekend I finally had to throw out my favorite pair of black heels bought at Target at least four years ago. CP likes to make fun of me buying clothes and shoes from Target, but I maybe paid $25 for the shoes and wore them out! Needless to say, I think that I got my money's worth!
My last purchase:

Except I don't think that picture above really shows off the "stone" which is actually grayish in color and super cute. Here is a better picture of the shoes while I was at work:

Dating disasters #1
An occasional series of some of the worst dates in my life and/or general disasters with the opposite sex. I am what you would call a “serial monogamist” so I didn’t go on tons of dates, instead choosing the people that I wanted to date carefully and generally dating them for a while. It’s the guys that didn’t last very long that provide the best material (or the ones that I drunkenly kissed).
Dating Disaster #1
Case in point: one summer when I was living in Philadelphia I went to a downtown bar with two of my friends. For those of you not on the east coast, most people flee for the Jersey shore almost every weekend. So, the bar was pretty dead. We had a great time at the bar that night- the bartender gave us tons of free shots and we basically hung out with him all night.
I had a BRILLIANT idea to invite the cute bartender and the bouncer back to my place in order to continue the party. After they got off their shift, they came by and we played some drinking games. Sooner or later, the bouncer ended up in my bed (we just kissed and then passed out) and the bartender ended up hooking up with my friend on the couch in the living room.
Although I was pretty drunk, I woke up to the sound of someone peeing….but it sounded a lot closer than the bathroom. Why? BECAUSE THE BOUNCER WAS PEEING INTO AN OPEN DRESSER DRAWER ALL OVER MY BRAS. Oh yes, I bring the classy ones home!!! I asked what he was doing and in a clearly put-out voice, he replied that he was peeing. I then yelled, “but you are not in the bathroom!!”
The guy had the nerve to finish up what he started in the bathroom and then get back in bed with me to try to continue to sleep. WHAT???? THE???? HELL????
For some reason, I couldn’t handle kicking him out myself, so I walked into the other room and woke up my friends and the bartender.
“CS, the bouncer just peed in my dresser drawer instead of the toilet.”
“WHAT?? Do you want me to kick him out?”
“Uh huh.”
CS then went into the bedroom, threw off the sheets and said, “Alright piss boy! Time to get out of here!”
The bartender kept apologizing profusely for his coworker, while the bouncer just seemed dazed and unapologetic. We think that the bouncer might not have been 21 at the time and maybe didn’t know how to handle his liquor??
Regardless, I had to wash everything in my dresser drawer and try to clean the wood as much as possible. At the time, I was in a really low-paying job and could barely afford rent and expenses so I wasn’t able to buy a new dresser. Ewwwwwwwwwww.

Worried
I wish that I had a happy post for you guys about my wonderful weekend home with CP and Fuzzy Britches. I mean, I did have a lovely weekend home. It was just way too short. We had our first kayaking excursion on a nearby river where we saw tons of sunning turtles, a beaver, two blue herons, and tons of birds. It was nice to get back on the water, but I should have put suntan lotion on my arms! They are fried!
This weekend was supposed to be full of addressing wedding invitations, but it was just so nice to be home that neither of us really had the motivation. Plus, we decided that we are just going to use our printer to do the envelopes. MUCH easier. I left CP with “homework” to look over the collection of not-so-cheesy wedding vows and ceremony readings about love (i.e. non-religious ones) to see if he liked anything. I also left him with my homemade rosemary-garlic-asiago bread (yum!) and a strawberry rhubarb pie (also yum!). This past weekend was our first pickup at the CSA so I was able to use freshly picked strawberries and rhubarb. :-)
But now I am back in DC. Not sleeping in my bed. Not waking up to Fuzzy Britches panting. Having to deal with my crazy boss.
And now, I just got an email from one of my bridesmaids (the friend from high school). She had problems after deciding to go on the pill for the first time in her life- hysterical crying, depression, etc. I told her about my awful experience with a generic pill about two years ago which made her feel less crazy. However, I guess that although she started feeling better in the days after she stopped taking the pill, she has gotten worse again. She said that she has turned into a hypochondriac and has convinced herself that she is dying. I guess some pre-cancerous cells popped up on her latest pap and she has to go back for additional testing next week.
Her father died of cancer about four years ago so that might have something to do with it? I don’t know where all of this has suddenly come from and I’m really worried. She keeps apologizing and calling herself a “psycho bridesmaid” but that is the least of my worries….
Ummm, happy Monday?

This whole thing gives me a headache
Last night my friend and I decided to head out for dinner at an Ethiopian restaurant here in the city. As I waited for her on the metro platform, another train arrived. Out popped a crap load of kids, two parents, bodyguards, and a camera crew. Huh? I was confused. Was there a new show on tv about Mormons or something?
My friend arrived on the next train and because the big family was so slow to get up the escalator, we caught up to them. She immediately recognized the family as the Duggar family from “18 Kids and Counting” on TLC.
I, on the other hand, had heard of the show, but had never seen it and don’t watch TLC enough to know what these people look like.
The bodyguards tried shooing us out of the way as we started to walk the same way as the family. From across the street we then heard “we love you Duggar family!” Holy crap. Seriously? We tried to walk faster to get around the family and get out of the way of the camera. I leaned over to my friend and said, “I really hope they aren’t going to the Ethiopian restaurant with us.” One of the bodyguards heard, and let us know that in fact, we would be dining at the same restaurant. *sigh*
Luckily we ran into the restaurant before the family arrived and the onslaught of people wanting to take pictures (????) showed up. I definitely didn’t understand the whole picture thing. These people aren’t celebrities just because they are on tv. Now if a sports star or an actor/ actress had come in I would understand that- they have a talent. The Duggar’s family talent is……..?????
Anywhoodle, we of course sat two tables away from the family (sigh again) but luckily the restaurant had dancing and music so if there were kids screaming and yelling, I didn’t hear it. I will, however, probably be on tv if the camera was facing my direction. Fan-f*cking-tastic. At least the food was good!
So here is where I get harsh. This is MY OPINION--having never seen the show. First off, I have a problem with the fact that these people think that it is okay to have 18 kids. How are these kids getting the attention they deserve? The older kids clearly have to take care of the younger ones because the two adults can’t be in 18 different places at once…..which then means that the older kids are having to grow up too fast.
Without one-on-one attention are these kids getting their homework done? Are they planning on going to college? If they are going to college, will all 18 of them have to take out student loans because their parents can’t help them out? Having student loans myself I think that sucks. It’s not like college tuition is getting any cheaper. Maybe that’s why the parents choose to whore their kids out. Do the kids get to explore their interests? Music? Sports? Etc. I can’t imagine that the parents have a big enough car OR the time to drive their kids to different practices.
The mother has been pregnant for 12 YEARS of her life. WTF???? Is that even healthy?? It’s called condoms, the sponge, surgery, etc. Like my cousin said, “a vagina is NOT a clown car.” LOL.
All of these questions don’t even scratch the surface of the issues and problems I see with having 18 kids. Great job overpopulating the earth Duggar family. Now please go away.

Lesson learned
Is it bad that I am currently so bored at work today that I want to send an email to a random friend saying “So…ummm…I just found out that I am pregnant. Haven’t told CP yet. Oh crap.” I almost wish that today was April Fools Day and not two months later. At least the responses would have been funny!
I have decided to be good and not send said email.
But it makes me think of another email that I sent out a few years ago. I was down in Argentina doing my law school study abroad summer program. The program took us to Iguazu Falls which was absolutely amazing!!! The first day we did a zip line over the jungle which was cool. I decided that I wanted to take video of the zip line, so I got out my camera to film. Halfway through, I started to get turned around and freaked out. FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON I thought if I grabbed the line with my left hand, I would be able to turn myself around so that I was facing forward. It was quite the smooth move when the zip line track run over two of my fingers and through the glove I was wearing. After we finished with the zip line, I thought….man my fingers hurt. Then I took the glove off and only saw blood.
Needless to say, a hilarious adventure ensued because when we were done for the day, I had to go to the sketchiest health clinic imaginable where they kept the instruments in a FISHING TACKLE BOX because I was in the middle of the jungle in Argentina! I then had to go to a pharmacy in the town to get a tetanus shot because I hadn’t had one in a while. My Spanish was still a bit rusty, so I started to cry when I thought that I would have to give MYSELF the tetanus shot IN MY BUTT. Instead, the girl behind the counter of the pharmacy who looked all of about 13 gave it to me. Hilarious.
When I get home from my AWESOME day, I decide to quickly write an email to CP and my parents. Being the AWFUL person I was, I wrote something like “had to go to the hospital today after zip line misadventure- hope my fingers will be okay in the future. Gotta go- will write more later.” Yes, yes, I was AWFUL. I thought it was hilarious though. My poor mom thought that I was going to come home from Argentina missing some fingers based on my message.
Needless to say, I calmed her down after telling her the story and won’t be sending out emails like that anymore....

Etsy wedding purchase
I made this fabulous purchase last week from etsy:

I originally saw it in a bridal magazine and thought it was such a good idea! Instead of a ring pillow, the ceramic bowl is easy for a ring bearer to carry AND it can be saved (what would you do with a ring pillow after the wedding anyway?). I ordered our wedding date on the bowl and will use it as a Christmas tree ornament every year!
I haven't ordered this yet, but think that it would be a seriously cute gift for my bridesmaids! It's a recycled wine bottle turned into a cheese tray!

What are some of your favorite things you have found on Etsy?

Mmmmm a man in a suit
There is just something about a good looking man in a suit. Luckily, I see them every day at work and during my commute. A well-fitted suit is a beautiful thing…..and I completely understand why Salt n Pepa sang about them in “Shoop.”
I don’t get to see CP in a suit very often. Engineers have it so lucky- they wear jeans or khakis every day to work and don’t even have to wear suits to interviews! However, the few times that CP has put on a suit since we have been together- mainly for weddings- he just looks so purdy!
At our wedding CP will be wearing a tux. He has decided on his own that he is going to rock the bow tie as opposed to a regular tie. I did try to protest as I like the regular tie look better, but CP put his foot down and said, “I didn’t get a say in your dress so you don’t get say in my tux.” So I just shrugged my shoulders and figured that there are bigger fish to fry.
CP joked about also wearing a top hat and tails, but I firmly said no on that idea! According to the wedding book I have, because we are technically having an afternoon wedding (3pm start), the guys shouldn’t be wearing tuxes. We think that’s silly. First off, my dad wanted to wear a tux to the wedding. Once CP heard that, he said, “well, I don’t want to be shown up by your dad so I guess I am wearing a tux!” Ha ha. Secondly, if we were going to do suits, that means requiring all of the groomsmen to buy a new suit for the wedding and that is much more expensive than renting tuxes. We are trying to minimize costs for the bridal party since almost all of them will be flying in.
What do you like to see men wearing (not just at weddings)?*
*If anyone says a banana hammock I am going to vomit. :-)

Crappyness all around
This was not quite the weekend I was envisioning after CP called on Thursday night to let me know that he would be working all weekend. In fact, yesterday I was hoping that the weekend could go by faster (who even says that?).
Crappy event #1: Saturday I woke up and was disappointed to see on my Wii Fit that I have gained back 10 of the pounds I worked SO HARD to lose just a few months ago. SH*T. I knew that my pants had been feeling tighter and that I was starting to not like the looks of myself again. It has been the combination of drinking more, eating crappier foods because they are more readily available, and not working out like I was at home (especially the whole not being able to run because of my hamstring thing).
So, I decided to head to the gym and even though I could feel my hamstring, I ended up running a slow 2.75 miles and walking another 1.5 miles. I was pretty happy with that result. Afterwards, I went to the grocery store and picked up only healthy things- lots of fruit and vegetables. I have one month left in DC and darnit, I am going to lose some of this weight!!
Crappy event #2: Saturday night I went out with my maid of honor J. We went out with some of her friends for a birthday and also met up with JS, a college friend of mine. I ended up drinking WAY too much. I know that I started to drink water later on in the night, but I think that it was too late. When I got home I puked and then puked again in the morning. I felt dizzy all day yesterday, slept most of the day and even today I am still not right! I even have lovely puffy eyes, along with some broken blood vessels on my eyelids and a sore throat so I sound like a man. Oh yes, I am THAT sexy right now.
Crappy event #3: One of my coworkers is single and so is my friend JS. I figured that if I let the two of them meet, if they hit it off great, if they don’t then no big deal. We have already established that I was drunk so by the time my coworker came, I probably had no idea what I was saying. It looked like the two of them were hitting it off, so I would check on them every once in a while and then go off and talk to other people for a while. While in the cab home, JS told me that my coworker said something bad about his appearance. I wonder if the bar was just too loud and he really couldn’t hear what she was saying, but if she really said something rude like that to his face then I am going to have to kick some a**. Knowing that he is my friend- a friend that I have had since freshman year in college- why would you be rude and say something mean to his face? He is a good looking guy so if he is not your type then fine. I have to find out more details….
UPDATE: I talked to my coworker and it turns out that she was just playing around with him. I'm guessing the loud bar and the fact that they don't know each other contributed to the misunderstanding. She feels bad that he took it the wrong way, he feels bad he took the wrong way, etc. Too bad because she thought that he was cute and was surprised that he didn't try to walk her out to her car. Oh well.
Crappy event #4: Instead of having J go home with some douche bag that she has hooked up with in the past, she came home with me. Before we went to bed however, we got into a fight. She kept saying that I didn’t know what is like to be single anymore. I kept arguing that being here in DC is a lot like being single because I come home to an empty apartment and only talk to CP once a day. We didn’t resolve anything before going to bed and haven’t talked about the fight because we were both so dead yesterday. I would like to have a conversation with her about this now that we are sober. I do agree that I don’t know what it is like to be single right now….but these past two months have sure felt like I was single! I certainly don’t think that I throw my engagement in her face….but maybe this has to do with the fact that JS and I essentially co*kblocked her from hooking up with the loser on Saturday night?
*sigh*
