Why I need to take an SVU hiatus
By Nonsequitur Chica
Last Monday on my second to last day of work down in DC I arrived at my metro stop and got off the train. I walked towards the escalator and could have sworn that I saw a bloody severed hand. I kept staring at it as I made my way towards the exit, but couldn’t quite make out exactly what it was. No one else in the metro station seemed to be checking it out so I decided not to deviate from my usual path. In my mind I then decided that what looked like the base of the severed hand was too clean of a cut for it to actually BE a severed hand, so that I would forget about it.
I also decided that I clearly watched too much Law & Order: SVU this spring while in DC. CP doesn’t like the show so when I was able to DVR that baby while in DC? Oh I DVR’ed the heck out of it. Invariably, USA would play 8 of them in a row at least one day a week, along with a couple of episodes every day. I’m not sure how long that show has been on, but I would say that I have now watched most of the episodes. Yeah they weren’t in order so I would get confused when one day Ice-T was hanging out with Richard Belzer, and then the next day Belzer would have a totally different partner. I also couldn’t figure out when Mariska Hargitay was off having one of her babies or off because she had pneumonia. *shrugs*
All I know is that due to my excessive SVU-watching, I thought that I saw a severed bloody hand in a metro station. I still have no idea what would have looked enough like a bloody hand to catch my attention. But I think that some time off of SVU is warranted. Then I won’t think that I found severed body parts in public transit systems!!
NBC shouldn’t be worried though….I’ll be back come fall for the new episodes! :-)

Happy day
Today is the day that I have been waiting for.
The past three months have all been for this day.
My LAST DAY OF WORK in DC.
Today is the last day of being bored out of my skull. Of perusing The Knot. Of checking out people’s updates on Facebook. Of logging onto Holly's Inbox. Of waiting for Jonathan Lee Riches © to write more funny lawsuits. And of clicking on my Google Reader in hopes that someone else posted something for me to read.
It is the last day that I have to deal with my crazy boss. The last day of feeling bad for my coworkers because I get to leave this h*llhole filled with toxic mold and they do not.
Tonight is the last night that I will sleep alone in a bed (at least until CP’s bachelor party). The last night that I will have to fend for myself for dinner. The last night that I don’t get a big hello from Fuzzy Britches after arriving home from work. The last night that I don't have the tools I need to make delicious dishes for Whip It Up.
Tomorrow I drive back to our home in MA. I hope for no traffic, despite the holiday coming up on Friday.
Happy days!!!! :-)

Another plug
My interest in National Parks is well documented on this blog. Early on in this blog, I wrote a post lamenting that attendance was down at National Parks. At that point, I probably had maybe one reader? :-)
This past fall, when trying to make a decision on which charities to give to, I decided that the National Parks Foundation was something that was very important to me.
My latest plug for National Parks is this story– that the National Park Service has waived the park fee on three different weekends this summer.
So what are you waiting for? If you haven’t made plans for a summer trip, why not go June 20-21, July 18-19 or August 15-16 to a National Park? I am thinking that on the 21st of this month, I might hit up Shenandoah or Great Falls before I leave the DC area!
Are you planning to visit any National Parks this summer?

Crappyness all around
This was not quite the weekend I was envisioning after CP called on Thursday night to let me know that he would be working all weekend. In fact, yesterday I was hoping that the weekend could go by faster (who even says that?).
Crappy event #1: Saturday I woke up and was disappointed to see on my Wii Fit that I have gained back 10 of the pounds I worked SO HARD to lose just a few months ago. SH*T. I knew that my pants had been feeling tighter and that I was starting to not like the looks of myself again. It has been the combination of drinking more, eating crappier foods because they are more readily available, and not working out like I was at home (especially the whole not being able to run because of my hamstring thing).
So, I decided to head to the gym and even though I could feel my hamstring, I ended up running a slow 2.75 miles and walking another 1.5 miles. I was pretty happy with that result. Afterwards, I went to the grocery store and picked up only healthy things- lots of fruit and vegetables. I have one month left in DC and darnit, I am going to lose some of this weight!!
Crappy event #2: Saturday night I went out with my maid of honor J. We went out with some of her friends for a birthday and also met up with JS, a college friend of mine. I ended up drinking WAY too much. I know that I started to drink water later on in the night, but I think that it was too late. When I got home I puked and then puked again in the morning. I felt dizzy all day yesterday, slept most of the day and even today I am still not right! I even have lovely puffy eyes, along with some broken blood vessels on my eyelids and a sore throat so I sound like a man. Oh yes, I am THAT sexy right now.
Crappy event #3: One of my coworkers is single and so is my friend JS. I figured that if I let the two of them meet, if they hit it off great, if they don’t then no big deal. We have already established that I was drunk so by the time my coworker came, I probably had no idea what I was saying. It looked like the two of them were hitting it off, so I would check on them every once in a while and then go off and talk to other people for a while. While in the cab home, JS told me that my coworker said something bad about his appearance. I wonder if the bar was just too loud and he really couldn’t hear what she was saying, but if she really said something rude like that to his face then I am going to have to kick some a**. Knowing that he is my friend- a friend that I have had since freshman year in college- why would you be rude and say something mean to his face? He is a good looking guy so if he is not your type then fine. I have to find out more details….
UPDATE: I talked to my coworker and it turns out that she was just playing around with him. I'm guessing the loud bar and the fact that they don't know each other contributed to the misunderstanding. She feels bad that he took it the wrong way, he feels bad he took the wrong way, etc. Too bad because she thought that he was cute and was surprised that he didn't try to walk her out to her car. Oh well.
Crappy event #4: Instead of having J go home with some douche bag that she has hooked up with in the past, she came home with me. Before we went to bed however, we got into a fight. She kept saying that I didn’t know what is like to be single anymore. I kept arguing that being here in DC is a lot like being single because I come home to an empty apartment and only talk to CP once a day. We didn’t resolve anything before going to bed and haven’t talked about the fight because we were both so dead yesterday. I would like to have a conversation with her about this now that we are sober. I do agree that I don’t know what it is like to be single right now….but these past two months have sure felt like I was single! I certainly don’t think that I throw my engagement in her face….but maybe this has to do with the fact that JS and I essentially co*kblocked her from hooking up with the loser on Saturday night?
*sigh*

Well poop!
Today I was going to post about my upcoming lovely weekend with CP back in MA. However, I got a call last night that he is going to have to work all weekend. As in, 12 hour days both Saturday and Sunday. Which then means that he would be super cranky after getting home and might not be able to take me to the airport for my Sunday night flight.
Soooooo, I changed my flight to next weekend (there goes my cheap flight!) and now I have to figure out what to do in DC. Maybe I will hit up some of the touristy places CP and I missed last weekend? Places like the National Archives to see the Constitution or the Holocaust museum?

Memorial Day Weekend
Quick recap of the weekend:
Friday night CP got in a bit early, but I got lost headed to the airport so I was a bit late in picking him up (stupid non-signage in VA!). That resulted in him being a bit cranky the rest of the night.
Saturday we saw all of the major outside monuments before having a good lunch with a friend at Old Ebbit Grill. Afterwards we decided that the Jefferson was too far away and that we were sick of walking so we headed to a bar with outdoor seating and drank away the afternoon. Sat night we had a delicious dinner at Vidalia - including an appetizer of the meat from a pig’s hoof and rabbit. Sat night we then met up with friends at a bar to reminisce.
Sunday we woke up and headed to Five Guys for a greasy lunch to combat all of the drinking we had done the day before. Damn it was good! Everyone talks about In-and-Out Burger being so amazing- but I was disappointed when I finally had it. Luckily, Five Guys did not disappoint. Mmmmm. I do NOT want to know how many calories were in my meal though.
With another couple, CP and I explored the Spy Museum, which was cool….but a lot of reading for people that drank a lot the night before. That of course led to more drinking while having to “rest our feet” before heading out to a Peruvian restaurant (El Pollo Rico) for some seriously delicious roasted chicken. While we were there, we saw some teenage girl pop a zit on her boyfriend’s face. WTF? Surprisingly enough, that sight didn’t make us throw up and we moved on to La Tasca, a tapas restaurant that also had sangria for us to drink while we debated how to raise kids, parenting styles, and what makes someone a slut. Yep, it was a funny conversation.
Yesterday CP and I had to get up early to make our Capitol building tour. While checking out the rotunda was cool, we weren’t impressed with the rushed tour. For lunch we made our way into Chinatown where CP decided to have congee with squid and pig skin (ewww) while our friend and I stuck with regular meats in our noodle soups! I dropped CP off at the airport last night, only to find out that his plane was delayed until 11pm….which means he didn’t get home until after 1am. Poor guy.
Today I am:
-Feeling bloated from eating my way around the city
-Not wanting to be at work
-Dealing with still-tired feet from walking everywhere in flip flops this weekend
-Mad that I didn’t put sunscreen on my burn on my neck yesterday so it itches- but I am (so far) being good and not touching it
-Missing CP already

Neck branding
So did I forget to mention that I burned my neck while using a hair straightener last weekend? I went to get my hair colored (okay, fixed) at a salon- but the coloring didn’t include a blow dry. Because I wanted to make sure that I liked the new color, the hairstylist allowed me to go upstairs to the spa section and use the hair dryer. I was going out that night and a straightener was available, so I decided to use it. The only problem? It was set at 190 degrees- much higher than I set mine at home. I literally touched my neck for maybe one second- it was enough to give me a beautiful burn line two inches long. Awesome.
Yesterday at work one of my coworkers said that I should be putting lotion or cream on the burn. I dismissed the idea until going on WebMD today. According to the website and my symptoms, I have a second degree burn that will start to go away in A MONTH and will be all good in A YEAR. I need to religiously put sunscreen on this summer because the skin is going to be very sensitive. I only have a little more than four months until the wedding- so I am hoping that the scar fades enough for makeup to cover the rest of it! CRAP!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
In happier news, CP flies in tonight! I don’t think that we will end up doing much tonight as he doesn’t get in until 9pm, but I have him for the entire weekend. We are planning a touristy weekend- monuments, museums, sights, etc. A nice dinner at Vidalia on Saturday night, followed by hanging out with friends at a downtown bar. More touristy things on Sunday and Monday- including a tour of the Capitol building!
An update (of sorts) on my post about my friend earlier this week. She says that things are back to normal and their wedding/ honeymoon is still on. They leave tomorrow. If she is happy then I guess I can't say anything.....

Observations
Recent observations:
*Boy do I miss CP’s cooking! Earlier this week CP and I were on the phone and he asked what I had for dinner. My answer? Creamy chicken ramen and a sweet potato. How sad. I am definitely back to my college/ single eating habits. I DO know how to cook now, but I don’t want to invest in spices, cooking utensils and other things that we have at home. I’m only here for a little over two more months….
*My eating habits are not as good because I don’t have someone watching me as I eat. I went on a little bit of a binge the first weekend I was in DC. I think that it was from a lack of eating crappy foods for a while so I bought a bag of Doritos and Girl Scout Samoa-flavored ice cream. Now that I think about eating them, I get a little grossed out, but it tasted good at the time! It’s funny because when I was single I did eat fairly healthy- watching calories, etc. so I wonder if the change of behavior was from being bored?
*I also haven’t been working out as much. One of my first days here, I wrote about my 6 mile run among the monuments. I have only run one more time after that….but that is mainly because I now have a problem with my hamstring and limping the next day at work isn’t too much fun. I think partly it is because at home, it is a bit of a competition to see who can work out more or harder (albeit an unspoken competition). To combat the “not pushing myself” syndrome, I have now signed up for a two days a week boot camp class. It is a bit more expensive than I would have hoped ($99/month), but so far it has been pretty good. Knowing that I am paying for the class makes me go, even if I don’t feel like it. However, it is also not helping my hamstring, so I think that it is time to see the doctor…..
*I haven’t been able to get a good night’s sleep since I got to DC. It’s not like CP and I snuggle at night before going to sleep or anything. I don’t feel scared that people are going to break into my apartment. I’m not sure WHAT it is, but I can’t get to sleep before midnight. The past two nights I have still been up at 12:30am. That is not cool when I have to get up and be productive at work (especially when my boss is picky and tough to deal with)!
*I watch crappier tv. Because CP and I have such long commutes back in MA, my tv watching decreased because by the time we got home from the gym, made dinner, etc. we only had a chance to watch one or two shows before heading to bed. Now that I get home earlier and can’t fall asleep, I find myself watching Tough Love or Rock of Love Bus for the 10th time that week. Ugh.
Hopefully I can snap myself out of my funk to start to work out more and eat better!

Weird dreams
I have been having some very odd dreams. Here is what my mind has recently subjected me to while I have been asleep:
*A dream about CP's parents and my parents meeting (which they will be doing for the FIRST TIME this weekend). My mom became really bitchy and stormed off halfway through the dinner....something that my mom would never do in real life. Also, even though it was supposed to be a meeting of the parents, CP's cousins and his wife showed up. I had supposedly met them before, but didn't remember them. They became all huffy about it and then hated me. Let's just say that the meeting didn't go well.
*A dream that as CP and I walked into the tent for our reception, I looked around and realized that I had planned an ugly wedding. Nothing went together and the whole place was too busy. Awesome.
*Saturday night I had a dream that I was watching tv and saw CP getting interviewed by a reporter (they showed footage of him....*ahem* naked and drunk). I'm not sure what went down but he was telling this reporter lies in order to get out of trouble. He told the reporter that he was a dancer at PS27 (which in my dream was a male strip club) and that he just finished having sex with the guy standing next to him an hour before (maybe this was his alibi?). When I confronted him (in the dream) about seeing him on tv and the stories that he made up, he just started laughing and thought it was hilarious.....probably because he got away with whatever he did after making up lies that were complete nonsense.
So clearly my wedding nightmares have continued. The first two dreams at least make some sense, but this last one??? Has me a bit stumped. Does this mean that I am worried about what CP is doing up in MA while I am down here in DC? Because CP was at his dad's house Saturday night for the holiday weekend....

Business travel
I have decided that being the person on the business trip is the easier of the two roles. I don’t have to deal with the bills, taking out the dog, cleaning our house, mowing the lawn, making dinner*, etc. I don’t have to spend two hours in the car commuting. Although CP has the comforts of home (sleeping in our bed, using our own things, etc), this has been much easier on me that I thought it would be.
Maybe it is because I am working instead of in law school this time around….meaning that I have less free time so that means less time to sit and think about how much I miss CP. Maybe it is because this time around we know that we have more of a say in when the traveler flies home.** Maybe it is because I know that come July, I will definitely be back in MA (we never had any idea how long CP’s travel would last….turns out it just didn’t stop until we moved out east!). Maybe I finally put my big girl pants on and have learned to suck it up. Or maybe I am more secure in our relationship what with the ring on my left hand (KIDDING).
Whatever it is, I am certainly missing CP, but I know that we can get through this. Of course we have already had a few phone calls where one of us has had a bad day and isn’t very talkative on the phone. CP has been working 11-12 hour days as it is so he hasn’t been responding to emails and is exhausted on his drive home.
I just have to make it to Friday and then I will get to see CP all weekend long!!!!
*Ordering out is really easy here in DC compared to the two pizza places that deliver in our small town. Also, I get money for my meals so I don't feel as bad if I order out once in a while.
**A couple of times (especially when CP was in Puerto Rico) he couldn’t come home at all for the weekend. He didn’t have any control over whether he worked over the weekend or not.

First weekend in DC
This weekend was a fun first weekend in DC. Friday night my maid of honor J and I tried to hit a bridal store in an effort to check out bridesmaid dresses, but didn't check the hours so ended up having only five minutes to look around the store. Whoops. J has now left for a short vacation so hopefully we can get back to the bridal store later this week.
Saturday morning I woke up and headed over to a friend's house for pre-Cherry Blossom Parade mimosas. We unfortunately missed the Grand Marshal of the parade, Alex Trebek, but had fun watching the last hour or so anyway. From there we fought crowds near the Tidal Basin and had a late lunch. The sun and the early drinking completely wiped me out. At least my weird tan lines have faded away!!
Yesterday I had to run some errands, including stopping by one of my favorite stores DSW. I ended up buying more than I originally went in for (that place is like Target!!). My purchases:

I seem to walk around a lot at work these days and my current work shoes are hurting my knees. I'm hoping these will be a bit better...
Every year I get a new pair of Tevas. They are the MOST comfortable flip flops for my feet.
I didn't go into DSW for these shoes, but as soon as I saw them, I thought that they would be perfect for my commuting walk both here in DC and when I get back to MA. They are seriously comfortable and I don't have to lace them up every morning!

So I need a new purse for the spring/ summer. I bought this purse, but I am not completely sold on it. What do you guys think?

First week in DC thoughts
My first week in DC is over. My thoughts on how it went:
*My new coworkers informed me that no one drinks the tap water in DC. Huh? One woman gave me bottled water on my first day and told me to get a Brita for my apartment. She said that she refuses to drink tap water and has for 40 years. My question to her is....does she drink the water at restaurants? I can't imagine that restaurants in DC are using bottled water at every table....
*Every time I visit I forget how steep the escalators are! My first day I was holding a box of documents and was seriously scared that I was going to fall down the stairs. I am going to need to be very careful after drinking!
*Here in DC, the work day doesn't start until 8:30 or 9am (for some people 9:30!) at my office. The fact that I get into work at 8am means that I am one of the first people in the office. Coming in at 8am up north means I am one of the late arrivals to work. Interesting.
*I am a bit terrified of my supervisor down here. He is a stern man, probably about 6'5" and completely no nonsense. I will have to rein in my silly jokes! And no watercooler talk....
*I found out that I would have to pay for the gym at work, so it's a no go. I would rather use the free gym at my apartment and my Wii Fit. Save money!
*CP has decided that the best time to talk is during his drive home. When he used to travel, I used to get annoyed because he would be checking his email, watching tv, etc. while we talked. That led to a lot of "huh?" questions because he wouldn't be paying attention. So, this way he just has to focus on driving and talking to me.
*CP and I have also already had our first bad conversation. He was tired, I was annoyed at my ipod, etc. I hate when we have those conversations. But I have to tell myself that
*CP used to come back from traveling and after a while, I noticed that he ate really fast. Now I know why. Sitting by yourself at a restaurant isn't fun....it's lonely. I had three nights at a hotel before I could move into my apartment last week and the dinner choices were scarce. That meant no people watching.....and shoving food down so that I could go hide in my hotel room the rest of the night.
*I think that although I complained about coming down here, my time in DC is going to be worthwhile. Two women from an office in the west coast city I used to live in just happened to be in the office last week. They have two positions opening soon and were hard-core recruiting me for them!

Beautiful run...
After Nilsa's comment on the distances that I should run each week to get ready for my 10 mile race, I set out on Tuesday to run as far as I could. My hotel is in Arlington (right near the cemetery) and it was a beautiful 60 degree sunny day. I decided to follow some of the other runners ahead of me since I didn't know where I was going.
......and around the Washington Monument.....
(not my pictures)
Every time I started to feel tired, I would check out the scenery around me and become invigorated. Running past places such as the Lincoln Memorial....
.....the new World War II memorial.....
......and around the Washington Monument.....
(not my pictures).....was awesome. Tourists were out in full force (Cherry Blossom festival is this weekend) so I did have to do some dodging and weaving during my run. Totally worth it though.
I wasn't sure how far I would be able to run on the pavement as it IS easier to run on a treadmill, but I was going steady on mile 6 and.....suddenly my ipod froze. Noooooooooo!!!! I didn't know what to do! My ipod nano is less than a year old and I bought it solely for the Nike+ program. I started to walk, hoping that frantically pushing buttons, then turning the ipod off, then removing the ipod receiver, would work. Nothing. I ended up walking the rest of the way back to my hotel, completely dejected....but also thinking that if it was totally broken, maybe I could upgrade to an itouch????
Lucky, a friend alerted me to the "reset" option and I was able to fix it last night. I'm not sure how I could have trained for this upcoming race without my ipod!!!
So, while the end of the run was frustrating, I still made it 6 miles on a lovely day. :-)

Update on this post: my bridesmaid got her period! YAY!

On another note, my post from yesterday was not an April Fool's joke.

Nervous
Shortly after arriving in DC my best friend and maid of honor has informed me that I will be running in the George Washington Parkway Classic- a 10 mile race on April 26th!
I had talked previously about wanting to run a half marathon sometime before the wedding, but because I wasn't sure if I was heading down to DC and after thinking about the time needed to prepare for a race of that length, I dropped the idea. I have continued to run at the gym for the past couple of weeks though (with the exception of taking a week off when I was sick), but instead of upping my mileage, I have been constantly running 4-5 miles each time.
While that is great, I really wish that I would have known about this race so that I could have been running longer distances! I now have a month to double my mileage. Hopefully this is possible!??!
Last week I ran three times- running 4 miles each day, and then walking another mile. I was hoping to run 6 miles last Saturday, but the gym was so hot that I gave up after 4 miles.
Time to get crackin'!!

Bad DC list
Things that I am going to miss while I am in DC (warning: this might get sappy!):
*Kissing CP as he leaves for work in the morning
*Kissing CP as he gets home from work
*Kissing CP before we go to sleep
*Snuggling with CP on the couch as we watch a movie
*Having CP cook me a delicious dinner
*Having a partner in the fight to lose weight. When I am in DC I won't have anyone to police me!
*Coming home to Fuzzy Britches jumping up and down because she is so excited to see me
*The relative peace and quiet of our town. No traffic noise, no people yelling, etc.
*With little to no ambient light, I will miss looking up at the sky and seeing all of the stars every night as I take Fuzzy Britches out.
*Part of the kayaking season will be spent down in DC
*DC gets really hot in the summer
*Spending "quality time" with CP
*Random hugs with CP and Fuzzy Britches
*Phone conversations with CP. It's much harder if one of us has had a bad/ hard day to deal with it in person rather than over the phone.
*Dealing with wedding stuff from afar. And then when I am home every other weekend, we aren't going to be able to relax....instead having to do lots of wedding stuff.
*Having to spend our own money for me to fly home
*In general, just not having CP and Fuzzy Britches to come home to
CP and I know how to deal with the long distance, having done it for a year and a half while I was in law school and he had to travel for work. We were hoping that we never had to do it again, but at least we know that this is only until July....

Good DC list
Things that excite me about my three month stay in DC:
*Commuting via the Metro as opposed to my current two hour commute
*Having friends close by (as in TWO BLOCKS AWAY) as opposed to over an hour
*Networking possibilities
*Not having to worry about someone staying sober in order to drive home. Metro baby!
*Having a gym at both work AND my apartment complex. Also BOTH have free fitness classes!
*A rooftop pool
*Warmer weather than MA (but I'm sure I won't be saying that when it gets too hot!)
*Interesting restaurants instead of the lack of choices we have in our small town
*Restaurants that deliver!
*Seeing my maid of honor on a regular basis
*Fun events that will happen every weekend
*More everyday walking
*Running outside on basically flat grounds as opposed to the hills around here
*Full control over the TV so that I can plug in the Wii Fit whenever I want (instead of fighting for time with CP)
So uhhh....here is hoping that I don't take advantage of ALL of the bad food choices available to me and use the time that I have to myself to throw myself into working out. I am bringing my Wii Fit down, along with my workout DVDs and hope to work out in the morning AND after work most days.
I have decided against training for a half-marathon, simply because I don't think that I am going to have the time, but maybe I can find a 10 mile race or half marathon that happens right before the wedding?
