While looking up something on Google for work, I came across this blog on Aid and Charitable Donations. I know that a large number of you do charity work and/or give to charitable organizations…..this blog is both interesting and informative.
This woman worked in Thailand after the tsunami, helping with aid efforts and gained a lot of knowledge in what works and doesn’t work. Interesting stories include sending large numbers of baby bottles and diapers to women in Thailand…..except that most of the country doesn’t use bottles or diapers. Or a request to send used bras to Uganda….but women there don’t wear bras.
From what I can tell, it looks like a good resource to check out before making donations this year. She stresses that the “non-sexy” donations are actually the most helpful ones. Plus, she is hoping to put together in the next month or so a rating system that looks at best practices of aid agencies, not simply the percent spent on administration costs.

What an interesting blog. I tend to focus my donations locally, but she still provides worthy questions, even for local donations.
