No more soda

I have known for a very long time that soda is no good for my body.  I used to drink about three cans of Diet Pepsi (after college), then cut it down to one for the past couple of years.  I figured that it was Diet so at least it didn’t add any calories to my day.  When Coke Zero came out I switched to it because the Diet Pepsi became too sugary-tasting (image that).  In law school Coke Zero and caffeine pills were the only way for me to make sure I got everything done because I don’t drink coffee.

For a while though, there has been a nagging voice in my head that kept telling me that one Coke Zero a day was still doing bad things to my body.  I mean, something that can clean chrome, clean your toilet, and get grease stains out of clothes isn’t really something that a person should be ingesting, right?  I also kept seeing studies that linked drinking diet soda with obesity.  But it was my only source of caffeine and it was 0 calories, so I continued to drink it.

As soon as I tasted the Very Berry Starbucks Refresher, I knew that it was time to stop drinking soda.  I told CP and my family about my decision so that they could help keep me accountable, and have only slipped up a few times in the almost two months of no soda (they were bad days).  I have to admit that going to lunch and not having a soda was odd for a while, but in addition to being healthier by drinking tap water instead we are saving money!  It’s also really nice to not have to lug the 12 packs of soda out of the grocery store.

Last week my sister posted an article on Facebook of the 7 side effects of drinking soda and I knew that I made the right choice.  If you don’t feel like clicking over, here are the side effects:

1.       Kidney Problems
2.       Messed-up Metabolism
3.       Obesity
4.       Terrible Hangovers
5.       Cell Damage
6.       Rotting Teeth
7.       Reproductive issues

The last reason is (as you know) especially important to me.  Sometimes I do miss the taste of Coke Zero, but I know that it’s simply not worth it.  I think that the longer I go without drinking it the more I won’t miss it.  Now if I could just get CP to stop drinking the stuff too….

Do you drink soda?

Good for you. Malibu and coke used to be my drink of choice on nights out, then I had stomach surgery and couldn't drink it for six weeks. I have not had a coke since, and now the thought of it makes my teeth wince. If you can get past the first few weeks it just becomes something you don't fancy anymore.

To see those risks written out is scary! I don't drink it very often, I will have one occasionally but I would rather have an ice cold water with lemon in a big foam cup! lol! I do have a friend "L" who is addicted to diet coke with splenda and when I say addicted I mean like 3 or more a day! :-/ I have been trying to get her to lay off but I will have to show her this list! good for you for saying no :)

Good for you. I stopped drinking soda when I was in high school and my cross country coach said that it could mess with your oxygen intake (something about the carbonation). Random, I know! I know I'm weird, but I love good water and will drink it over pretty much anything and in most social situations too.

I don't really like soda. We almost never even have any in the house. I do like carbonated water or seltzer, though, and we have a sodastream that we use at home to make our own. There's some natual flavorings you can add, or you can drink it plain (or add lemon or lime). I'm kind of addicted to it!

I used to think that Mt. Dew was God's own sweet nectar. I quit drinking it about two years ago. I still drink soda, but at a level of about 1-3 per month. Not often. I do love the carbonation and substitute with sparkling water.

Good for you!! I used to be a diet dr pepper freak! I started to drink som again after our FET failed. I've cut out soda and caffeine completely now again as we get ready for IVF #2 next month. Hubby is a soda addict and I've tried and tried to tell him all that you have posted but he still drinks...I have to give him credit though because he has cut back to 1-2 a day.

good for you!!!!!! I gave it up YEARS ago and went for years withOUT drinking any...but slowly have re-introduced it here and there (literally I'm talking maybe one or two per WEEK)...

however we do have a soda-stream which I love and drink too much of...

I have given up caffeine (AND alcohol, of course) for my IVF cycle (and hopefully pregnancy) and it is hard, but it will be SO worth it!

Yes, I drink Diet Coke daily. If I gave it up, I'd cry and be a mean person. So, for the safety of others, I will continue to drink it.

I don't drink soda normally or buy soda, but I loove a frosty icey diet pepsi, diet coke or diet dr. pepper, or diet root beer once in a while. I don't buy it because I know it would become a habit. I have drank it regularly before (my work stocks free sodas) and I used to buy it in my early 20's. But I noticed...when you have it everyday, it looses the appeal, and just becomes normal tasting. Now I just do it when I eat out sometimes, and definitely for the movie theater! Even pregnant, I will make my hubby get a large, so I can steal sips from it.

I drink a LOT of sparkling water, because I think I really like the carbonation more than the caffeine. I like the grapefruit perrier, and trader joes carries some inexpensive flavored unsweetened water.

Good for you for kicking the habit! It's definitely a good one to quit! I quit animal products for fertility and other reasons! Scary how many hormones are in our meat and dairy!

I rarely drink soda and when I do, it's the real stuff, no diet for me. Many of the diet and zero sodas have aspartimae(?), bad for asthma, and other artificial sweeteners that I don't like the taste of. Plus, I don't like the sugary taste/feel it leaves in my mouth. When we are in the US, I do drink more soda for nostalgic reasons/flavors and it's much cheaper.
Good for you for giving it up. But don't beat yourself up on the few occasions you do have one. ;)

I haven't been a soda drinker for the past 10+ years. Every once in a while I will crave a Root Beer or Frozen Coke and NEED IT NOW! But, after I drink it I am fine for another few months.

My hubby on the other hand drinks a case of Mt Dew every couple days. It almost makes me ill...

I've never been a big soda drinker and so when I do drink it, it tends to make me feel awful. I'll have an occasional root beer, but that's it. I can tell my body doesn't like the sugar in most sodas and I'm more than a little freaked out by all the chemicals that can be found in them.
